When it comes to creative advertising campaigns, anything goes. In the case of guerilla marketing, advertisers want to surprise potential customers and encourage them to have unconventional interactions. With ambient advertising, marketers place ads on unusual objects or in unexpected places, often making use of the surrounding environment. In both cases, using oversized objects is commonplace. Check out this list of creative ads that made use of some seriously oversized objects.
Pepperidge Farm’s Pole Vault Mat
This Pepperidge Farm Soft Bread campaign was developed by the Miami Ad School in 2009. The idea was that the soft bread would be associated with a crash mat used in sports — specifically pole vaulting — making the product seem even squishier.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
As we can see in this picture, a large faux slice of bread was used as a crash mat in various sports facilities and stadiums. This makes sense considering lots of sports fans are also sandwich lovers.
Nike’s Oversized Soccer Ball
This outdoor ambient advertisement for sports company Nike was spotted in Bangkok, Thailand. This ad involves a large billboard where a footballer looks like he’s just kicked or dropped a soccer ball into the real-life space below him.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
To really hammer home the message, the company then produced an actual oversized soccer ball and staged it to look like it has crashed into a BMW on the street below. There doesn’t seem to be a tagline for this campaign, but hey, they literally crushed it.
Wrigley’s Fresh Breath Breathing Man
Agency BBDO came up with this Wrigley’s Orbit Fresh Breath Mints in order to show just how fresh the company’s breath mints are. The oversized installations of a person exhaling were placed in front of active snow cannons at popular ski locations. This meant that the oversized person looked like he had constantly fresh breath.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Naturally, this campaign was a hit with tourists who were surprised to stumble across it on a mountain top. In fact, it actually became a tourist attraction of its own.
FedEx Kinkos’ Giant Stationary
Another BBDO project involving oversized objects is this campaign for FedEx Kinkos — the previous name for the company’s printing services arm. In this ambient advertising campaign, large items of stationary interact with the built environment around them.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
For example, in this image, we see an installation of a giant highlighter that’s “highlighting” the edge of the sidewalk. This is a great way to make products look functional and practical, while also reminding people to go out and buy them.
Mondo Pasta’s Ship-Side Spaghetti
In this advertising campaign for German brand Mondo’s Pasta, creative Jung von Matt came up with these giant stickers to go on boats in Hamburg Harbor. This is the second biggest harbor in Europe, and the busiest place in Hamburg, meaning lots of footfall around these oversized advertisements.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This campaign was designed to get pasta into the consumer’s mind and uses boating ropes in place of tasty spaghetti. Using the slogan, “So good you can’t let go,” the image suggests that Mondo pasta is impossibly delicious.
Bic’s Oversized Razor
This Bic razor advertisement that was placed in Japan attempts to show just how sharp the company’s razor blades are. As you can see, this campaign uses an oversized Bic razor propped up against a blank billboard, with a trail of cut grass leading up to it.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
We have to wonder which member of staff had to get up every morning and cut this long grass pathway, but it was certainly worth it for this attention-grabbing advertising campaign.
Pantene’s Anti-Breakage Braid
This creative campaign by Grey Canada was made for shampoo company Pantene’s new anti-breakage shampoo. To illustrate just how strong hair can become by using Pantene, this campaign used a huge oversized braid hanging out of a window, much like the fabled hair of fairytale heroine and Disney princess, Rapunzel.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
If you look closely, you’ll see someone scaling the braid to get through the window above. As a tie-in, passersby received samples of the shampoo with the tagline, “Really strong hair.”
Rodenstock Eyewear’s Giant Banana Peel
A banana peel has been a sign of slipping for decades, so eyewear brand Rodenstock employed Berlin artist Stefan von Essen to make ones that you couldn’t possibly miss. This large, realistic banana peel sculpture was placed in various shopping malls, and understandably attracted lots of attention.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The company wanted to communicate that with their bifocal glasses, you couldn’t overlook an obstacle in the street. We’re not convinced this message is totally clear, but the installment is certainly attention-grabbing.
Alliance Theater’s Afro Pick
Anyone with an afro would recognize this oversized object as an afro pick, used to detangle natural curls and stimulate the hair’s natural oils. For this campaign, Alliance Theater was producing a play about African-American barbershops – Cuttin’ Up – and wanted to advertise the event with an iconic image.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
BBDO came up with this creative approach that uses an oversized afro pick sticking into an afro-shaped bush. This is a pretty unmissable sight, and visually reflects the content and themes of the play.
Terminix’s Nibbled French Fries
If you quickly glanced at this oversized packet of fries, you might think that it was advertising a fast-food company or a hipster restaurant. However, on closer inspection, you’d see that each “French fry” is actually a plank of wood that’s been nibbled at by pesky termites. Or at least, is a plank of wood designed to look that way.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This ambient ad was created by Publicis, and placed in high traffic urban areas. The tagline — “Termites eat 24 hours a day” — really hammers home the message.
Siemen’s Sizeable Hand Mixer
German multinational conglomerate Siemens is the largest industrial manufacturer in Europe. For this creative idea, the company opted for an oversized object, using rotating doors that look like spinning beaters. Clearly, this campaign is for the new Siemens hand mixer, with a tagline that reads — “Attention! Stirs with up to 5600 rmp. The new Siemens MQ 9550.”
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Campaigns like this that make the most of the surrounding environment really enjoy a constant benefit. In this case, every time the door is used, the advertisement comes to life.
Havaianas’ Floral Flip-Flops
Another masterful campaign by BBDO, this flip-flop flower bed was made for Brazilian sandal company, Havaianas. These oversized, flower-filled flip-flops were made to promote the company’s new floral print shoes, and were literally overflowing with actual flowers.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
As well as bringing their new floral prints to life, this creative campaign reminds consumers of the company’s bright color palette. Using an oversized shoe shows off the comfortable and stylish design of the sandal, and makes passersby associate the brand with the outdoors.
The Tennis Masters Cup’s Racket
When the Tennis Masters Cup took place in Shanghai, TBWA came up with this “Human Tennis Ball” campaign. In order to show how impressive, athletic, and exciting tennis can be, this campaign used a tennis racket shaped trampoline and a bouncer dressed in tennis-ball neon yellow.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The copy on the racket trampoline reiterates the power involved in professional tennis and connects the idea of top-tier tennis with the installation as a whole. Kudos to the human tennis ball in question!
Rimmel’s Quick-Dry Nail Polish
To promote cosmetic company Rimmel’s new quick-dry nail polish, the company created an oversized bottle of polish pouring midstream in the middle of the street. According to UK agency JWT, the overall aim was to “literally stop young women in their tracks” and show the product’s quick-dry nature.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
As well as these large nail polish sculptures, the company placed smaller, life-size versions around point-of-sale counters in stores. This adds nice continuity to the campaign while retaining some of the spectacle.
Tibits’ Vegetarian Restaurant’s Fork
BBDO is responsible for this ambient advertising campaign that utilizes a giant fork. In fact, for this campaign, several oversized forks were affixed to trees in major parks and outdoor shopping areas. This campaign took place in Switzerland for the large vegetarian restaurant chain, Tibits.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This campaign communicated the idea that eating at Tibits was like sticking a fork straight into nature. By utilizing the natural environment, this campaign pointed out just how fresh the vegetarian fare at Tibits is.
Nike’s Building Breaking Ball
Using an oversized object in an advertising campaign is a sure-fire way of grabbing attention. People literally cannot miss ginormous objects, especially if they’re used to seeing them in their regular dimensions. Here’s another ambient ad campaign by sportswear company Nike that shows a huge soccer ball embedded into the side of a building.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This idea conjures memories of a kick-about with friends, where a firmly booted ball smacks into something. This guerilla marketing installation is all about fun and adventure.
McDonald’s Massive McMuffin Breakfast Bag
Who wouldn’t look twice at a massive McDonald’s brown paper bag perched atop a bench at a bus stop? That’s what agency DDB was counting on when they came up with this creative campaign for the New Zealand market.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Apparently, in New Zealand, the fast-food company sells the Massive McMuffin — which includes bacon, egg, cheese, and two sausage patties. Using an oversized takeout bag is a great way to represent the size of the breakfast.
Lego’s Creative Crane Campaign
This wonderful Lego advertisement cleverly made use of its environment and provided a whimsical visual to anyone that passed it. This campaign took place in Chile, where building companies don’t work on weekends. This allowed advertising agency IDB-FCB to use central cranes in Santiago to hoist giant Lego bricks.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This guerilla marketing campaign enhances Lego’s reputation for being a fun-filled, creative, and imaginative brand. It also sparks nostalgia, bringing back memories of childhood afternoons spent tinkering with Lego blocks.
Woodland’s Hiking Boots
This fun campaign for footwear brand Woodland’s climbing shoes was made by Lowe for the Indian market. As other companies in this list have done, Woodland opted for a blank white billboard with their logo in the bottom corner, and let their oversized object take center stage.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This campaign uses giant shoes with the laces tied in a creative, camping-adjacent way. One has a series of knots, and another a lasso — hinting at the adventure that lies ahead when you buy Woodland footwear.
Dulcolax’s Toilet Roll Holder
German agency Havas Worldwide came up with this creative advertisement for laxative brand Dulcolax. The product treats constipation — and so, using an oversized, empty toilet roll holder implies that it allows people to use the bathroom. Plus, these toilet roll tubes are so recognizable to everyone that they instantly make people think of using the toilet.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
These large installations were set up throughout the city and made use of existing structures. We think it’s safe to say that this campaign gets the message across.
Penline Stationery’s Strong Tape
This ambient ad campaign for Philippine stationery store Penline was conceptualized by the Malaysian agency, Euro RSCG. Like some other campaigns on this list, Penline used an oversized version of what they were selling to grab attention from passersby.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
With no tagline and just a hint of a logo, this ambient ad relies on its oversized pieces of tape to tell the story. From where we’re standing, it works pretty well at communicating its message and is intriguing because of its simplicity.
Gorge Grown Farmers Market’s Carrots
U.S. agency Owen Jones and Partners came up with this creative campaign to advertise Gorge Grown Farmers Market. Similar to the fork campaign we’ve already seen, this ambient ad uses oversized carrots affixed to trees so they look like they’re being pulled out of the ground.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
As well as using extremely large carrots, this agency attached images of vegetables to car antennas, making them look like skewers or kebabs. This sort of campaign perfectly signals what it’s trying to say.
Covergirl’s LashBlast Mascara Turnstiles
Here’s another clever creative advertisement that makes use of the built environment. This Covergirl campaign was created by Saatchi for the Canadian market and uses subway turnstiles to illustrate the lengthening qualities of Covergirl’s new LashBlast mascara.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Cosmetics are a crowded market, but this attention-grabbing ad received significant media attention and made the mascara number one on the Canadian market. The tagline — “extremely long brush, extremely long lashes” – drives home the brand’s key message, and the accompanying image ties together the color scheme.
Moser Baer’s USB Truck
Using vehicles for advertising is a tried and tested idea. After all, having an advertisement on wheels can only be a good thing, and surely increases the number of people who lay eyes on it.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Agency TBWA made this campaign for Moser Baer, an Indian manufacturer of digital storage devices. In order to illustrate the company’s “mega storage capacity,” this campaign transformed one of their trucks into a USB pen. This showed consumers the capacity of the company’s USBs and put the brand in audiences’ minds.
McDonald’s Coffee Pot and Cup
We’ve already seen fast-food chain McDonald’s use giant paper bags to advertise their New Zealand Massive McMuffin, and here the company has gone down a similar path. This campaign was rolled out in Vancouver, Canada in order to advertise the company’s two-week free coffee promotion.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Ad agency Cossette came up with this idea, which uses a street light pole to mimic a stream of freshly brewed black coffee. It’s unmissable, and it’s clear — making it a hit for us.
Zwilling J. A. Henckels Knife
Bates Malaysia came up with this ambient ad for German kitchenware manufacturer Zwilling J. A. Henckels. In order to illustrate that the company’s knives are super sharp, the agency came up with this oversized kitchen knife placed on top of a street lamp. The message? That these knives can cut through steel.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In terms of oversized objects, we have to say that a knife is a pretty unnerving one. Really, wouldn’t it be frightening to see a giant knife perched above your city?
Formula Toothcare’s Toothpick Toothbrushes
When it comes to creative advertising, a significant part of an agency’s strategy is considering where to place objects, installations, or billboards. For this campaign, agency Ogilvy & Mather used a non-traditional location for their giant toothbrush, but a standard location for toothpicks.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The idea behind this campaign was to remind consumers that Formula’s toothbrushes can effectively remove food particles, just like toothpicks can. These giant toothbrushes were placed on restaurant tables in food courts in Indonesia, reminding consumers of their oral health.
Martor Hobby’s Razor Blade
Depending on your affection towards pigeons, this advertisement from Martor Hobby might be a little gruesome. German company Martor is the leading international manufacturer of high-quality safety knives — and this campaign, by Venividi, was for their extremely sharp hobby razor blades.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
These oversized blades were placed close to Mainz University’s Arts, Design, & Architecture department, with hopes of attracting students. To illustrate the blade’s sharpness, the fake scattered remains of sawed in half pigeons lay at the blade’s base.
Smart Car’s Bicycle Locks
BBDO strikes again with this creative campaign for Smart Car across Canada. With this campaign, the brand wanted to communicate that Smart Cars are as versatile and compact as bicycles, especially when it comes to city living. So, they made oversized bike locks and attached them to the vehicles across Canadian cities.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
A further benefit of this campaign is that using an oversized object makes Smart Cars look even smaller, and therefore reiterates the idea that they’re small and convenient.
Nationwide’s Super-Sized Paint Spill
At first glance, or even at second, you might think that this creative advertisement was promoting a brand of paint. However, this ad is actually for Nationwide Insurance, with help from a fake or fictitious brand, Coops Paints. This ad was erected in Columbus, Ohio, and measured a whopping 400 square meters.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Basically, this advertisement shows a building ruined by spilled pain — including a car and kiosk in the parking lot — with the tagline, “Life Comes at You Fast.” The Nationwide ad even has some paint splashes.
Axe’s Colossal College Calendar
We’re not exactly huge fans of this Axe campaign that was created by agency When Gee for the South Korean market. Using an oversized calendar, the British-based body spray company suggested that using the product would lead to meeting a new woman every day.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This messaging might be OK, but combined with a giant calendar wrapped around the female dorm at a local university, it’s a little creepy to us. However, Axe — known as Lynx in parts of the world — is famous for its chauvinistic advertising.
Powerhouse Gym’s Giant Bodybuilders
To advertise Powerhouse Gym, the Savannah College of Art & Design erected large billboards on construction sites. The images — hung on large, incomplete buildings — show bodybuilders doing several lifts, such as cable flies and lateral lifts. By incorporating the surrounding cranes and machinery, it looks like the bodybuilders are contributing to the construction.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The overall idea behind this campaign was to incorporate adverts with aspects of everyday life. That way, Powerhouse gyms are integrated with their surrounding environment.
Coca Cola’s Street-Side Straw
McCann Canada came up with this creative campaign for soft drinks giant Coca Cola. With their iconic red branding and long-time logo, the company is already streets ahead when it comes to advertising. Seriously — they basically own Christmas!
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In this ambient ad, the company uses an oversized straw to suggest that their beverage is irresistible. In one image, a stepladder and empty bottle imply someone has climbed up for a drink. In another, multiple straws lead to multiple apartments.
Vodafone’s Magnet Covered Refrigerator
Admittedly, it took us a moment to fully grasp the message behind this Vodafone campaign, but once we did, we loved it! This oversized refrigerator was the brainchild of BBH, a British agency, and placed beside a busy airport terminal.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This fully magnetized refrigerator was covered in magnets from various countries. The message? That Vodafone provides cell service no matter where you jet off to. The company’s tagline — “Make the most of now” — was stuck on in magnet form, too.
Mini Cooper’s Massive Vending Machine
Automotive company Mini Cooper hired agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky to come up with this massive vending machine. Placed on the side of a building, the machine appears to contain 12 Mini Coopers in a selection of colors. This design highlights the car’s compact nature and makes them seem tantalizingly available.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The campaign’s tagline — “Let’s Motor” — just adds to the brand’s sense of fun and adventure. We have to hand it to Mini Cooper for being particularly good at advertising.
7-Eleven’s Biggest Ever Slurpee
This absolutely ginormous Slurpee was the brainchild of Leo Burnett for the grocery chain 7-Eleven in Australia. This giant replica of the famous frozen drink was made to promote the chain’s biggest ever Slurpee — a 1.8-liter drink — and measured a whopping 36 feet. That’s a lot of Slurpee!
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This huge Slurpee was built in Coffs Harbor, New South Wales, and became its own tourist destination of sorts. Complete with a drinking straw, this oversized object certainly makes an impression.
Net Virtua’s Pixelated Folders
So far we’ve seen a lot of oversized objects used in creative ad campaigns, but we haven’t seen a massive folder yet. This campaign was put together by the Brazilian advertising agency, Talent, for telecommunications company Net Virtua.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
As part of this campaign, oversized folders in the style of pixelated computer files were delivered to businesses using messengers. Rather than sending large files in a clunky and outdated way, this campaign wanted potential consumers to consider using Net Virtua’s technology instead.
Bounty’s Big Spills
This excellent creative campaign for Bounty kitchen towels comes from U.S. agency Publicis. Wanting to communicate that their product mops up even the biggest spills, the company staged some seriously oversized spills in New York City and Los Angeles.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In NYC, commuters passed by a six-foot-tall toppled coffee cup, complete with steam and the smell of fresh coffee. In LA, shoppers saw a seven-foot-long popsicle melting on a busy street. At each location, samples and outdoor ads engaged with passersby.
Rubin’s Freshness Bags
Publicis Frankfurt came up with this great marketing campaign that’s similar to some we’ve already seen on this list. While other campaigns so far have used giant forks or massive carrots to create an arresting visual, this one went as far as adding fake green leaves to trees.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In various parks in Germany, bare trees were spruced up with new foliage and then covered in an oversized Rubin freshness bag. The tagline read, “Keep it fresh with freshness bags by Rubin.”
WWF’s Black Cloud
This campaign was created for the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) in China, as part of their “20 tips for sustainable development” campaign. The colossal black cloud was staged to look as though it came out of a car exhaust and read, “Drive one day less and look how much carbon monoxide you’ll keep out of the air we breathe.”
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This was a very successful guerilla marketing campaign that saw the WWF receive an increase in volunteers. The black cloud was also covered in local and international news.
Universal Studios’ Footprints in the Sand
Here we have Santa Monica Beach in Los Angeles with some rather large footprints etched into the sand. This oversized ambient advertisement was created by agency David&Goliath to advertise theme park Universal Studios’ new King Kong 3D ride.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
As well as the mega King Kong-sized footprints, this campaign also included a crushed lifeguard vehicle. This staging must have made quite a scene in the area and was surely very exciting for any kids that happened to come across it.
Gold Toe’s Oversized Underpants
U.S. company Gold Toe makes more than half of the men’s dress socks in department stores across the country, but they also make underpants and t-shirts. To advertise this, the company hired Aspen marketing, who went about dressing New York City’s iconic statues.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In this image, the famous charging bull on Wall Street models a particularly large pair of panties. This ambient ad was staged during New York Fashion Week and drummed up an awful lot of attention from tourists.
Extra Thin Schnitzel’s Tenderizing Hammer
Gitam BBDO in Israel is responsible for this creative campaign for extra thin schnitzel. As with some of the other ambient advertisements on this list, this one uses aspects of the built environment, making for a fun everyday experience.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
For this campaign, Gitam BBDO transformed this parking barrier into an oversized tenderizing hammer, normally used for meat. Of course, these sorts of hammers are essential for making extra thin schnitzel, so the whole idea works wonderfully. The fact that the hammer rises and falls constantly is ideal.
DHL’s Shipment Box
Logistics company DHL employed the help of Ogilvy & Mather Manila for this Philippines project. The agency made use of some local scaffolding and light fixtures to create the appearance of a massive DHL container. The campaign wanted potential customers to know that their boxes were strong and that they specialize in heavyweight shipments.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
You really couldn’t miss this ginormous object from the highway, and DHL’s classic yellow-and-red color palette helps it to stand out even more.
Patricia Cornwall’s Forensically Sealed Book
It’s not often that books are advertised using ambient advertising, but this example really hits the nail on the head. For this campaign, American crime writer Patricia Cornwall enlisted the help of advertising agency US Sydney in Australia. They created an oversized version of Cornwall’s upcoming book, The Scarpetta Factor, enclosed within a large forensics bag.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Considering that the book series’ lead character is Dr. Kay Scarpetta — medical examiner and forensic analyst — this creative campaign perfectly communicates the novel’s main themes.
40 Designers That Thought About Every Single Detail
Designers put varying levels of thought into the things we see every day, from the buildings we walk into, to the logos and food labels we use daily. However, some designers go above and beyond to make sure the products they put out are convenient and clever. These are 40 designers that thought about every single detail of what they were designing.
Knee-Activated Bathroom Sinks
Public restrooms are a necessity, even though they can be gross sometimes. Many people try to find ways to make their public restrooms trips cleaner to avoid getting sick.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This design makes motion-activated sinks look obsolete. This design makes it easy to turn the water on simply by pressing the button with one of your knees. This is perfect for keeping you from touching the faucet, especially in cramped situations where there are multiple people around the sink.
All-In-One Stairs and Ramp
Ramps must be added to buildings with stairs to accommodate those with mobility issues. It’s important that these ramps be easily accessible to anyone who needs them.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This architectural design perfectly blends the stairs and ramp leading to the building. It prevents those who need the ramp from having to go out of their way to find it. It also accents the appearance of the front entrance of the building, making the ramp blend into the design.
Space for an Upside Down Bottle
We’ve all been there. You’re in the shower, only to realize that your shampoo or conditioner bottle is almost empty.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The nearly universal solution to this problem is to turn the bottle upside down so the contents drip nearer to the opening where they come out easily. With this shower caddy, you can rely on the opening in the shelf to perfectly hold your upside-down containers, rather than letting them fall to the shower floor.
Charge Your Phone and Shop
When you’re out running errands, you probably have a lot on your plate. People often use their phones to help them out, too.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Maybe you keep your grocery list on your phone, use a store’s rewards app, or even just need to give a housemate a call to check if they need anything. This can mean that if your phone dies, you’re at a significant disadvantage. When you visit this grocery store, though, you don’t need to worry – just charge your phone while you shop!
Scoop and Clip Coffee
For those that need a bit of caffeine to get the morning started, coffee is often the drink of choice. Making a good cup, though, is highly dependent on measuring the grounds.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
There’s no need to use a spoon and have an inaccurate measurement with this device. This scooper allows you to measure out the exact amount of coffee you need to create the coffee you enjoy. When not in use it can be clipped nearby, keeping it handy for those mornings when you’re tired.
Adjust the Water Safely
The cold shock of turning on the shower is almost never pleasant. For this reason, many people try to turn on the water beforehand, so it can warm up a bit.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
If you like to turn on the shower before you get in, consider this design. Having the handle on the other side of the shower makes this much easier. You’ll never need to be wet waiting for the water to warm when you have this shower design!
How Full Is This Elevator
Taking the elevator is often more convenient than taking the stairs. This is even more true in buildings where taking the stairs can involve many flights worth of walking.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Elevators often get cramped, though, and it’s hard to know when it’s at max capacity. This handy device is helpful for keeping the elevator car under maximum capacity. It is also helpful for informing people getting in the car, as they will understand whether or not to take the next elevator.
Control the Late Night Volume
Midnight snacks are perfect, until they involve a beeping microwave. The sound can wake other people, leading to annoyance at being woken up in the middle of the night.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This microwave is the answer to this problem. The volume of the beeping can be raised or lowered by the user. The volume can be lowered during late nights or even raised by those with hearing difficulties! There’s no reason to fight with your microwave sound with this appliance.
A Fun Way to Move
Tall staircases are no fun, especially when you have kids that want to run ahead. When there are no escalators in sight, stairs become the most boring way to travel.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Adding slides to this staircase is an awesome way to bring a bit of joy to an otherwise boring place. Children that have extra energy can take the slide, along with adults who are too tired for the stairs. They may only work in one direction, but they are worth the trip.
Signaling for Help
Employees in stores are trained to provide assistance to customers who need help. On the other hand, we’ve all been in a situation where someone has tried to help us and we weren’t interested.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
To keep awkward interactions to a minimum and ensure employees are where they’re needed most, this store offers two different basket options. If you choose a green basket, employees know not to bother you. If you choose an orange basket, you’re signaling that you need a little help shopping.
Kid’s Eye View
Children love fast food for their delicious meals and the toys that are often included. Often, though, it’s hard for them to decide what they want to eat at the restaurant.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Rather than having to read the menu to their child, many parents wish their children could read it themselves. This design for the kid’s menu is a great way to accomplish this, all while letting children decide their meals for themselves. Sadly, this will only benefit kids who can already read.
A Private Tent
Those in shared rooms at college or camps will know that privacy can often be in limited supply. This means you need to get creative for time alone.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
There’s no need to kick your roommate out for time alone when you have this tent. It can be left open for conversation, or easily zipped for privacy. While you may not have the whole room to yourself, this can certainly make having roommates a bit more bearable.
Making Parking Easy
Parking precisely in the outline spot is important, especially when you have a nice car that you don’t want to get hit. This can be hard in some lots, where visibility is limited.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This design allows drivers to see the parking space lines on the guardrail that borders the parking lot. This makes it easy for drivers to know if they’re within the bounds of the space. This way drivers never need to worry about hitting others or getting hit in cramped lots.
Safe Skateboard Parking
In urban areas where car travel is a hassle, people may choose to travel with other forms of transportation. Many opt for bikes, rollerblades, and even skateboards.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In these cases, it’s important to have a place to lock up your bike or skateboard so it doesn’t get stolen when you need to leave it somewhere. This rack is a way for people to lock up their skateboards so they don’t have to be carried when not in use.
Recreating Ruins
Historical sites are an excellent way to learn about history firsthand. It can sometimes be difficult, though, to visualize historical sites that have eroded and degraded with time.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
By overlaying a diagram of the building over the ruins, people are able to see what it used to look like. This gives viewers a better idea of the beauty of the original building. It also demonstrates how much has degraded with time, an important lesson for historians.
Wheelchair-Friendly Swing
Children in wheelchairs often experience limitations in what they are able to do. This is most often because many aspects of the world are not made to accommodate those with disabilities.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
There’s no need for children in wheelchairs to miss out on using a swing. This swing has a ramp that allows wheelchair-bound children to get on a ramp that functions as a swing. This gives them the ability to enjoy the fun of playgrounds along with the other kids their age.
A Dispenser for Bar Soap
In terms of hygiene, hand washing is highly important. It’s impossible to wash your hands properly without a quality soap, regardless of whether you choose a bar or liquid soap.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
One downside of bar soap is that it can cause a mess once it’s wet. This device shaves a bit of soap off the bar while keeping it from leaking out or causing a fuss. This is an alternative to liquid soap that has all the benefits of its solid counterpart.
Check the Microwave
With steamer bags of frozen vegetables becoming a mainstay in the frozen section, people are starting to catch onto the craze.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
When you opt for this brand, you have an easy way to tell how long you have to toss a bag in the microwave to make sure it comes out fresh and delicious. If you look at these bags, you’ll notice the microwave display has a time on it. This is actually the accurate cooking time of each option on display for all to see.
Making Sure the Plugs Fit
The struggle of limited outlet space is all too familiar for many homeowners. When you have multiple family appliances with large plugs, it can be difficult to arrange them so they all fit.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Trying to fit two large plugs on top of each other is often a lesson in futility. This design makes it easier, though, because the plug is curved. This way, if you plug it into the upper half of the outlet, it doesn’t block the lower one from being used.
Everything You Need
Public restrooms often have the hand dryers off to the side, forcing you to walk with wet hands across the room. This makes handwashing difficult in busy, cramped bathrooms.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
By having the soap, faucet, and dryer next to each other, users can clean their hands in a quick, streamlined fashion. It cuts down on bathroom traffic, freeing space for the next person in line. Stadiums, colleges, and venues should install these immediately to keep their bathrooms straightforward and easy.
Need More Space?
Libraries with computers are helpful for those that need the internet while they study. They can get in the way, though, for those that only need desk space.

This university knows how to make sure that students and other visitors have the space they need to work. There is a space below the desk for the monitor to sink down into, clearing the space and giving you room to work without any hassle or need for extensive rearrangement.
Minimalist Marketing
While we’ve paid a lot of attention to the things we use every day, there are also clever marketing designers behind the brands we don’t see daily.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Take this ad for example. While the building blocks themselves are in simple designs, the shadows show a much more detailed and realistic image. It’s a great way to subtly show how these toys can help unlock the imagination, even if you aren’t someone who builds complex designs.
See the Time from Anywhere
With the advent of concepts like blackout curtains, it can be hard to gauge how late it is when you first wake up. Plus, you don’t necessarily want to get up and check.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This alarm clock for a hotel is great because you can stay snuggled in your blanket without needing to move a muscle to check the time. While it has a traditional front display, it also features a display with the time on the side, so you can see from wherever you are.
You Can Grip It
Winter brings cold weather that often leaves us wearing gloves or mittens. This can sometimes limit our ability to do everyday tasks without being able to grip.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This door knob design is a great way to work around the limitations of wearing gloves. The knob has a textured band that runs around it, making it possible to be turned by those wearing gloves. This keeps you from having to take your gloves off, a major plus for the winter months.
A Symmetrical Freeway
If there’s anything that can ruin just about anyone’s day, it’s sitting in heavy traffic, or even worse, winding up in an accident, even if it’s minor.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
That’s why taking the time to cleverly design the roadways is crucial to making sure everything flows smoothly. This designer took the time to make sure this freeway stayed as safe and streamlined as possible. Not to mention, the symmetry is pretty satisfying from this bird’s eye view.
Transformative Shelf
Practicality is a major aspect of interior design, and one that is often overlooked. It is important to ensure that every piece is functional in preventing clutter in the home.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This piece functions not only as a bookshelf, but also as a desk. This foldable shelf is a great option for those with limited space or who otherwise want to limit clutter. When not in use, it can easily fold up, keeping your room neat and tidy.
Coconuts Made to Drink From
Coconuts are delicious in a variety of ways. Their shavings are used in everything from health foods to confections, and coconut water is an increasingly popular drink choice.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The only downside is that coconut isn’t the easiest food to crack open and enjoy. This store has an answer to this, luckily. Instead of breaking out tools to break open one of these, all you have to do is use the pull tab. This makes them as easy to open as a canned drink.
Never Burn Out
One of the most infuriating things about candles is that they tend to make a mess of melting wax and don’t last forever. With this designer’s help, you aren’t out of luck.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Instead of simply pouring off the sides into a dish to catch it, this candle holder design collects the wax in a tube below the candle itself. This allows you to take your time and burn the candle completely down if you want, and you can just relight it and start from the beginning once more!
A Map of Seattle
Navigating in major cities can be difficult if you aren’t from the area. Not having a phone or map can make this especially hard, often leading people to get lost.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This manhole cover design is a unique way to keep people from getting lost in Seattle. The map details the inspections of the city, making navigation a breeze. These covers are presumably found on every manhole in the city, meaning you could follow the map from one manhole to the next.
Options for Everyone
Utensils like chopsticks hold a significant place in many Asian cultures. This can mean that if you’re going to your favorite takeout spot, you might get served with a pair of chopsticks.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Yet, if you’ve never used them before, it can be a challenge. Plus, it can also be embarrassing to have to ask for something else. With this utensil, you have the option to use them as chopsticks or a fork, and it makes the chopsticks easier to use for beginners.
Rent a Charging Station
There are a few essentials that you need to bring on any vacation or business trip. For instance, you shouldn’t leave without a toothbrush.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In the modern world, this also means bringing chargers to keep your tech up and running. If you forget them, you may end up paying the price later when you have to buy a replacement. Alternatively, if you’re staying at this hotel, you can rent a charging station for a short-term solution.
Level, Pour, Never Spill
Baking can be difficult because it requires ingredients to be measured precisely and accurately. Inaccurate measurements can ruin the product and cause tons of frustration for the baker.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Measuring dry ingredients requires you to level the cup so that there is nothing overflowing. This makes the measurement precise, but is difficult with most measuring cups. The arm on this cup allows you to level it easily, a design element most bakers would be overjoyed to have.
A Handle Too High
Outdoor playgrounds are an excellent way for children to get out their energy. They are able to run around and play under the watchful eye of nearby adults.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This playground has a fence to ensure that children are kept safely inside. The handle is kept high enough that only the adults watching the children can open the gate. This ensures that small children cannot accidentally open the gate and run out where they cannot be easily supervised.
Saving You and Your Pets
Traveling with pets can be hard. Even the most well-behaved and highly-trained service dog is still an animal with basic needs.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
If you’re traveling with an animal for any reason, this airport has you covered. Not only can you stop in the restroom when you need to, but a small grassy patch is designed for pets and service animals to take care of business without the owner going out of their way or the animal making a mess.
Saving the Earth
In recent years, the drive to be eco-friendly is stronger than ever. From recycling to cutting back on meat to opting for shorter showers, a lot of people are trying to do their part.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
That includes this designer, who made this bathroom attractive, functional, and environmentally-friendly. The water that you use from the sink goes into later use in the toilet itself. This limits your water waste without looking awkward or being too cumbersome.
Picnic Table for All
Going out for a picnic with your family and friends can often be more complicated than it needs to be. More often than not, there is not enough space at the tables and many families resort to simply spreading a rug on the grass and eating there.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
However, this park has special tables that are specifically designed in a three-tier kind of way. This ensures that adults and kids all have comfortable places to sit while still maintaining a close-knit, family experience.

Keep Your Page
Even with the rise of e-readers, traditional books are still popular among many readers. It is for this reason that products are made to improve the experience of reading books.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........

Holding books for long periods can cause hand-cramping, as well as make you susceptible to paper cuts. This device is able to solve both problems easily. Not only does this hold your page, but it also does so with a soft grip that won’t cut your hand while you use it.
Krispy Kreme Checkout
Branding is a major part of marketing for businesses. Iconic brands work hard to make sure customers have a positive opinion of their brand and its products.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........

This Krispy Kreme designer knew what they were doing with this one. Not only is this a great way to get a little creative with a design, but it makes it clear what you’re walking towards as well, since it visually stands out. Even if you had somehow never heard of Krispy Kreme, you’d know exactly what you’re looking at.
Tulip-Shaped Arrangements
Landscaping is an art that creates beautiful arrangements for outdoor plants. These designs are often used to accentuate businesses, schools, and other large properties that have expansive outdoor lawns.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........

When the client decided to have tulips as part of their landscaping display, this landscaper chose to elevate their work. Not only did they plant some beautiful tulips, but they also planted them in the shape of a giant tulip. This cheeky design is likely to make this lawn look good to visitors.
Easy-to-See USB
Plugging something into a USB port is already a challenge. After all, you have a 50-50 chance that most of us still manage to get wrong at first glance.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
However, this difficulty soars staggeringly high when you’re trying to plug a USB device in when it’s dark. With this design, you can opt for a slight illumination that will help you see exactly where your USB port is rather than having to make guesses in the dark.
