Talk shows have become an important feature in modern pop culture and their hosts have become stars unto themselves. But what did our favorite hosts do before making it big time? Before Seth Meyers landed his leading role as the host of Late Night with Seth Meyers the comedian, actor, and writer was known for his performances and writing contributions on Saturday Night Live. Prior to this, he worked as an international performer and comedian largely based in Amsterdam, Holland.

Maury Povich

Maury Povich has a history as a TV host and anchor for a number of different news networks all across America. Having originally studied television journalism, Povich made his way from one station to another and from strength to strength. When media mogul Robert Murdoch acquired the TV channel Metromedia in 1986, he gave Povich his first show – namely A Current Affair. When that ended in 1990, Povich went on to host his own show, The Maury Povich Show (and later Maury) for 15 years!

Jerry Springer

Jerry Springer has a really interesting history and is certainly unlike most talk show hosts. Originally born in England, his family immigrated to America in 1949. After studying law, Springer worked in politics and was an advisor to then-Senator Robert Kennedy. Springer later served as a political figure in Cincinnati. He was soon forced out of office and became a TV anchor. He started his now hugely popular TV show, The Jerry Springer Show, in 1991, and the rest is history.

Despite Ricki Lake being best known for hosting her own TV show, The Ricki Lake Show, the young actress made her claim to fame in feature films. Other than films such as Hairspray and Crybaby, many of the movies she was in were underground, independent productions by directors like John Waters and Jeffery Levi – a far cry from her role as a talk show host. At 24, Ricki Lake also made a name as the youngest talk show host at the time.

Rosie O’Donnell

Rosie O’Donnell’s career started in stand-up, where she had her first break on Star Search. The exposure she earned on the show enabled her to get more acting jobs in feature films, alongside names like Tom Hanks, Madonna, John Goodman, Geena Davis, and Meg Ryan. Proving that she could handle the limelight, she was given her own show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, which ran for six years. Since then she has been a co-host on The View and has made appearances in a number of TV shows.

At an early age, Candace Cameron decided that she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her brother, Kirk Cameron. Kirk Cameron had made his name as an actor on the show Growing Pains, a show that Candace also made appearances on. Before her co-host role on The View, she spent the majority of her career acting in TV shows like Who’s The Boss and Full House, as well as acting alongside names like Tom Hanks and Sally Field.

Chelsea Handler is probably best known for her role as the host on the Chelsea Lately show on E!, but before hosting her own show, Handler honed her talents across a number of different skill sets. She spent a lot of time as a stand-up comedian and worked on a number of TV shows as a co-host. She even authored five NY Times Bestselling Books. At the moment, she’s working on her documentary series and focussing on her role as an activist.

While many younger audiences will not know a name like Jack Paar, the man has been credited with establishing many late-night show traditions. Having started his career as a DJ and radio show host, Paar eventually made his way onto late night TV with early appearances as a guest on shows like The Ed Sullivan Show and as a host on a number of game shows. He eventually moved on to become the second-ever host of The Tonight Show.

George Lopez

George Lopez is a well-loved comedian and actor who is best known for his stand-up comedy and performances in films such as Fatal Instinct and Balls of Fury. He is also credited with being one of the first few Latin Americans to have his own TV show on American TV. After having a successful run with the sitcom George Lopez, he went on to host his own talk show, Lopez, which was canceled after 12 episodes to his audience’s disappointment.

Carson Daly

Unlike many in his cohort of TV show hosts, Daly made a name for himself while working as a radio DJ on KROQ-FM, an influential LA-based radio station. After his success on the station, Daly was offered a job hosting MTV’s Total Request Live. His foray into the world of TV proved to be successful and soon afterward, he was offered his own talk show on NBC called Last Call With Carson Daly. He has also hosted The Voice and a segment on The Today Show.

Kelly Ripa initially started out her career on TV as a dancer and performing artist on shows like Dancin’ on Air and Dance Party USA. At the time, her goal was to become a news anchor and she often did the cast news reports. In 1990, Ripa was cast in the soap opera All My Children as Haley Vaughan, a role that lasted 12 years. She auditioned for co-host on Live! and the show soon became Live! With Regis and Kelly and later Live! With Kelly.

Conan O’Brien

Conan O’Brien is one of the few talk show hosts who has acquired a true cult following over the years. He started writing comedy during his time at Harvard and worked as president of The Harvard Lampoon. After writing for a few comedy shows, he became a comedy writer for Saturday Night Live! and then a producer and writer for two seasons of The Simpsons. He also hosted Late Night for 16 years and currently hosts his own show, Conan.

Queen Latifah made waves as one of the early black, female rappers of the ’90s – achieving the first-ever Gold Record for a female rapper as well as a Grammy award. Since then, she has gone on to star in a number of films and has become an icon for empowering women. She had a talk show called The Queen Latifah Show from 2013 to 2015.

Howard Stern

Howard Stern has been referred to as the King of All Media because of his success in a number of different fields. His most prominent success is his work in radio broadcasting. His show, The Howard Stern Show, aired from 1986 until 2005 and has garnered a cult following. He has also authored two best-selling books and a hugely successful film. Stern is also well-known for hosting the show America’s Got Talent, which was broadcast around the world.

Jimmy Kimmel

Jimmy Kimmel started his entertainment career as a radio host. After gaining success with a sports show on KROQ-FM, he moved into the world of TV as a co-host on Win Ben Stein’s Money. After his success on the show, he went on to produce his own shows, namely Crank Yankers, Sports Show With Norm Macdonald, and The Andy Milokanis Show. In 1999 he started hosting The Man Show and in 2003, he switched to hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! which is what he’s best known for today.

Dick Cavett

Dick Cavett had a humble start in the world of entertainment. His first few jobs were mainly as a writer until he landed a position as a writer for The Jack Paar Show. After that, he built up the confidence to start doing his own stand-up routines and started gaining notoriety among famous actors as a genuinely funny person. It wasn’t long until he was given his own show in 1968 and became famous for giving compelling, funny, and in-depth interviews with his guests.

Jimmy Fallon

Jimmy Fallon set out from home with big hopes of making it onto the Saturday Night Live team and after doing stand-up comedy until the age of 23, his dream came true! He continued to work on SNL during the Weekend Update segment of the show. After a brief stint doing feature-length films, Fallon re-entered the world of TV as host of The Late Show. Soon afterward, he receieved the coveted roled of replacing Jay Leno on The Tonight Show.

Johnny Carson

Johnny Carson is widely regarded as one of the most-loved talk show hosts in history. He originally started his career in TV as a writer for The Red Skelton Show. However, once Jack Paar’s time on The Tonight Show had come to an end, Carson was called to take his place. He accepted and ended up leading the show’s best performing run, lasting three decades, as well as winning four Emmys and being nominated for a lot more. Carson made a substantial mark on American television history.

James Corden

James Corden started his career as a stage actor. His first show Fat Friends was a huge success. After that, he decided to start a new show called Gavin & Stacey which really helped the actor make a name for himself and won him a BAFTA award. He did a number of guest performances with artists like Kylie Minogue and Dizzee Rascal and after his Carpool Karaoke channel on Youtube became a viral sensation, he was offered to host The Late Late Show after Craig Ferguson.

Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart had started his career as a stand-up comedian, who professes to have had a fear of the stage for a long time. After being given the opportunity to work on a few early MTV shows, Stewart was given an interview on The Late Show With David Letterman. He was considered a finalist for hosting the show but lost out to Conan O’Brien. In 1999, he started hosting The Daily Show which lasted until 2015. The show won 22 Emmys during his time as host!

Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert started his career in comedy as an understudy for now-famous actor and comedian Steve Carell. After touring with the comedy group Second City, Colbert eventually made it onto The Daily Show as a correspondent. In 2005, Colbert was chosen to host his own show known as The Colbert Report. The show garnered him a lot of recognition and eventually led him to take over David Letterman’s position as host of The Late Show in 2015 where he currently works today.

Jay Leno

For a number of years, Jay Leno had been a performer and guest on The Tonight Show as a stand-up comedian. He also had a few minor roles, often uncredited, in films, but up until then, he was largely a comedian. When Johnny Carson left The Tonight Show, Leno replaced him as host. This was controversial as many expected David Letterman to take over the show. He hosted The Tonight Show for 17 years and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2014.

Ellen Degeneres

Ellen Degeneres is a well-loved TV show host who started her acting career in feature-length films like EDtv and Mr. Wrong. In 1994, she starred in her own sitcom simply titled Ellen. It was during this show that she came out as being openly gay and caused waves in the TV world with the first lesbian character on TV. In 2003 she went on to start her own TV show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which became massively popular and is still aired to this day.

David Letterman

David Letterman is the longest-standing TV show host in American history with 33 consecutive years hosting The Late Show With David Letterman. Letterman originally started his career as a weatherman on the radio, but soon moved into hosting his own morning show The David Letterman Show. After his success on the morning show, NBC decided to give him a better time slot, leading to his hosting The Late Show With David Letterman. He filmed over 6,000 episodes during his time as host and retired a legend.

Kathie Lee Gifford

Born to a signer and a musician, talent was in Kathie Lee’s blood. She studied drama in college and her career took off when she became a vocalist on Name That Tune in the ’70s. In 1985 she got her big break when began co-hosting The Morning Show alongside Regis Philbin, which then became Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee in 1988. They were nominated for Outstanding Talk Show Host during the Daytime Emmy Awards for eight consecutive years. After 11 years on the Today show, Kathie Lee Gifford has just announced she is leaving.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is one of the biggest names in TV and has had a controversial history. She was raised in a poor rural family and suffered an abusive upbringing. While she was in high school she got a job in radio. In the late ’70s, Oprah landed a job as a news anchor and later got her own TV show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which aired from 1986 to 2011. Since then she has started her own media company and is considered the wealthiest black philanthropist in American history!
