In a human adult, the body has 26 vertebrae that are located in five different areas. The vertebrae are identified as cervical vertebrae and thoracic vertebrae. They are also known as sacral vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae (also known as the sacrum) and the coccygeal vertebrae (also known as the coccyx). Each kind of vertebra differs in regards to the weight it must support in addition to its unique structural characteristics they possess.
