Scientists need methods of illustrating chemical structures that represent the important properties of molecules. Lewis dot structure is a way to do this.

Important Points of Lewis Dot Structures:

• In the Lewis dot structure the electrons which are shared by two atoms can be identified by a line, which is known as bond bond or, in some cases, as two dots between atoms.
• Unpaired valence electrons are identified by dots that are located outside of an atom. These electrons are known as single pairs..
• In organic molecules, atoms have to be in accordance with the of the octet (or duet) rule (exceptions are possible).
• To ensure the stability of the resonance of a molecule the atoms should be charged in a way that is at the lowest level possible , and their total must be the same as that of the molecular (for neutron molecules charge equals zero).
