To assess the viability of the reaction, the Gibbs sign free energy is analyzed. Through the thermodynamic relation, the sign of the rate constant along with the potential of the cell standard could be identified as well.

    Answer

    For an spontaneous (voltaic) cell, this cell’s potential should be positive. It is connected to the normal Gibbs Free Energy change by:

    ΔGo = −nFEocell

    A cell’s potential that is positive or negative will cause a positive or negative normal Gibbs Free Energy change. This value of the ΔGo value is linked with the constant of equilibrium “K” through:

    K = e−ΔGo/RT

    Positive or negative Gibbs Free Energy change will result in an “K” value higher than or equal to than 1.

    ΔGo K
    > 0 1 <
    = 0 = 1
    0 < > 1
