♦ Relevant knowledge

Organic Chemistry refers to the investigation of the substances that are that are found within living creatures. In other words, it is studies of carbon compounds.

If we can understand the organic molecules and the way they function in a way, we can better know how animals and humans function. This is the part of chemistry that concentrates on the basic components of life. Because life is so vital to us so it’s no surprise that organic chemistry has lots of practical applications in our daily lives. Everything we eat is composed from organic compounds. This is the reason our bodies require it. A lot of the products that man has created that we take for granted are a result of organic chemical processes.

    Concepts and Reason

Due to the presence of a ring strain in the structure, epoxides (cyclicethers) react towards nucleophiles. They are subject to chemical reactions with acids and bases. Both chemical reactions lead to the formation of alcohol.

    Fundamentals

Grignard reagent, a strong nucleophile that attacks the less substituted side epoxide rings, generates an anion and on treatment with aqueous acids solution gives the equivalent alcohol.

Nucleophilic attack by ethyl anion upon the less substituted carbon in the epoxide rings.

The oxygen will remove the proton from the solution to neutralize its negative charge, which leads to the formation of alcohol.
