Organic substances are identified based on six steps set out in the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), comprised of a prefix suffix and root. IUPAC is an organization which develops standards to name compounds. The IUPAC rules guarantees that the proper naming of every organic structure in the correct way.

Compound Naming Steps:

  • Step 1: Find the carbon chain that is the longest within our compound.
  • Step 2: Name the longest carbon chain.
  • Step 3: Determine the end (suffix) is that.
  • Step 4: Make sure you have a carbon atom number.
  • Step 5: Name the groups on the sides.
  • Step 6: Place the groups of side sections in alphabetical order.
