Carbonyl group
The carbonyl group is composed of the carbon atom which is connected to the oxygen atom through the double bond. The electrons of the single oxygen atoms draw the proton which is emanating through the acid.
a)
In the above reaction an oxygen carbonyl atom will detach the proton. This generates an electric charge to the oxygen. The alpha hydrogen will be wiped by a proton, and the electron’s movement eliminates the positive charge on the oxygen.
The mechanism is illustrated below.
The result of the reaction is alcohol tautomer. The stability of this product is a result of resonance effect.
The reaction in general is displayed below, along with the principal product.
Therefore, the major product of the a) reaction is 2-phenylcyclopent-1-enol.
b)
In the reaction described carbonyl oxygen atoms will absorb the proton. This creates an electric charge to the oxygen. The alpha hydrogen will be wiped and is replaced by the Enolate Ion. The enolate ion is able to attack the chlorine molecule and forms the alpha-halohydrin.
The mechanism for the reaction is described below.
The reaction in general is displayed below, with the main product.
Therefore, the major product of the b) reaction is 2-chloropentane-3-one
