A nuclide experiences beta decay in which a neutron transforms into a proton and, in turn emits an electron as well as an antineutrino in the process. The addition of a proton following the reaction causes an improvement in number of atoms in the nuclide without affecting its mass. In the end, the nuclide or element alters its name without any change in mass.
