You’re driving down the highway late one night at 17 m/s when a deer steps onto the road at 44 m in front of you. Your reaction time before stepping on the breaks is 0.50 s, and the maximum deceleration of your car is 12 m/s2.

Part A asks how much the distance is between you and the deer when you come to a stop, which the answer was 23 meters.

Part B is where I am stuck and it asks what the maximum speed you could have and not hit the deer. My most recent answer was 33m/s, but that was incorrect, and I am unsure what I am doing wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

♦ Relevant knowledge
It is important to note that the driver has an average response speed that is 0.5 seconds to engage the brakes. This means that the driver had already covered a distance. The term “deceleration” refers to an acceleration of negative magnitude. Deceleration is the amount of speed lost in the movement
