The E-Z system is the system that specifies configuration. It is based on the Cahn–Ingold-Prelog convention. Sequence rules are used to determine the relative priorities of the groups attached to the sp2 double bond carbon atom. This process is repeated for the determination of relative priorities of two groups on the sp2 double bond carbon atoms. The relative position of the groups of higher priority on one carbon-atom is considered. The isomer will have Z configuration if two groups with higher priority are located on the same side. If the two higher priority groups are located on opposite sides, the isomer will have E configuration.
Sequence rules: These rules determine the priority of the groups attached each sp2 carbon double bond.
1.The higher priority of the group it is a member of, the greater the atomic numbers of any atom attached directly to the sp2 carbon. The priority is given to the heavier isotopes if they are different atoms.
2. If rule 1 fails to determine the relative priority of two groups attached to a carbon, because the first two atoms in both groups are identical, then rule 2 may be applied. This is done by comparing the numbers of the next atoms in the groups.
3. Multiple bonds that are present are considered separate singles within the atoms.

is used to assign priority to substituents. If the two groups attached to a carbon are identical since the first two atoms, then the rule can be applied by comparing their atomic numbers.
