Alkanes are inert, and undergo only burning reactions as well as free-radical Halogenations. Therefore, when alkanes are converted to functional groups of other types the process must be initiated with the halogenation process to create alkyl halids. Alkyl halides is possible to undergo various reactions that result in compounds with various functional groups. For instance, alkyl halides are formed from alkenes resulting by elimination reactions. Additionally, alkyl halides can be excellent precursors for substitution reactions because of the excellent leaving group properties of halogens.
