The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry also known as IUPAC has established guidelines for the designation of organic compounds. The necessity for these rules was derived because there are a myriad of organic compounds, and that using generic names for these compounds would not be practical. Additionally, one of the advantages of the IUPAC names is that it allows one to understand what the essence of a substance based on the name.
