Stereoisomerism in organic Chemistry refers to isomers where the distinction is only created by the spatial arrangement that the atoms are placed in. The atoms that bond to carbon atoms that are double-bonded on either side need to be identical. In plain English take a look at a compound that is double-bonded. carbon atoms are bonded to atoms with similar types in this case, stereoisomerism doesn’t exist.

    Concepts and Reason

    This concept is used to determine whether an alkene compound can exist in stereoisomers.

    Fundamentals

    Stereoisomers are isomers with the same molecular formula, but differ in the arrangement of the atoms.

    Stereoisomers can exist for Alkenes about double bonds.

    Cis/trans are stereoisomers. E/Z are stereoisomers.

    If two identical groups are located on the same side of the double bond it is cis isomer.

    If two identical groups are located on opposite sides of the double bonds, it is trans isomer.

trans-isomer

    If two groups with high priority are located on the same side of the double bond it will be Z isomer.

    If the double bond is broken by two groups of high priority, it will be E isomer.

    a. The following alkene can be found:

    H2CHC=CHCHZ

    It is possible to exist as transstereoisomers.

    b. The following alkene can be found:

    H3CHC=CBrCH CHz

    It is possible to exist as E/Zstereoisomers.

    c. The following alkene can be found:

    It can’t exist as stereoisomers.

    d. The following alkene can be found:

    It is possible to exist as stereoisomers.

    Ans:

    Part A: Yes, the given alkene is possible to exist as stereoisomers.

    Part B: Yes, the given alkene is possible to exist as stereoisomers.

    Part C: No, the given alkene is not possible to exist as stereoisomers.

    Part D: Yes, the given alkene is possible to exist as stereoisomers.
