By using Tortoise-Git, I’m attempting to submit a new commit, but I keep getting the message that “git did not exit cleanly exit code 128”.

Error: git did not exit cleanly exit code 128

I don’t know why this error occurs. Can someone give me some solution for this error?

Solution: This error can be fix by these solution below:

    1. Try the following commands to set up your git username and email:
git config --global user.email "[email protected]"
git config --global user.name "Your Name"?
    2. Verify if the “Index.lock” file exists in the .git folder; if so, delete it before attempting to push the file again.
    3. Git-gui provides a helpful response if you are running Windows 7 64-bit: a prior git crashed and left a lock file. Manually take it out. In some case, there was in .git/ref/heads/branchname.lock.
It can be deleted and error 128 will go away. Tortoise-refusal git’s to offer such a simple answer astounds.
    4. Simply stash all of your modifications before pulling or pushing again.
    5. Try launching Git Bash and executing git there if any of the solutions mentioned above don’t work; you might get a better error message.
