Carbon contains two s and two carbon p orbitals, which is a total of four valence electrons that can be hybridized to different degrees: ......... ADVERTISEMENT ......... ..8.. Types of Orbital Overlap: The most common types of overlap with Covalent molecules are sigma bonds overlap and pi-bond overlap. In sigma bond overlap, s and p orbitals axially overlap to form a strong bond. In pi-bond overlapping, orbitals overlap laterally or along the sides.
The orbital overlapping concept can be used to explain the concept of bonding between atoms within molecules. These overlaps can be divided into two types according to the orientation of the orbitals within the atoms.
1. Cross-overs from one end to the other give a strong [katex]\left( {\rm{\sigma }} \right)[/katex] sigma
2. Pi [katex]\left( {\rm{\pi }} \right)[/katex] is formed when there are side-ways overlaps
Hybridization: This is a term that describes the merging of orbitals in order to create hybrid orbitals capable of bonding.
The number of sigma bonds that are attached to an atom can explain the hybridization.
Take a look at carbon atoms in their various hybridized states as shown below.
