The appendicular skeleton is formed during development from cartilage, by the process of anal ossification.
The appendicular skeleton is divided into six main regions:

  • Collar (4 bones) – Left and right collarbone (2 and scapula (2).
  • Arm and forearm (6 bones) – Left and right humerus (2) (arm), elbow bone (2 and radius (2) (forearm).
  • Hand (54 bones) – Left and right wrist (16) (wrist), hand joint (10), proximal phalanges (10), medial phalanges (8) and distal phalanges (10).
  • Pelvic bone (2 bones) – left hip bone and right hip bone (2).
  • Thigh and leg (8 bones) – Left and right femur (2) (thigh), patella (2) (knee), tibia (2 and fibula (2) (leg).
  • Feet and ankle (52 bones) – Left and right posterior (14) (ankle), ankle (10), proximal (10), medial (8) and distal (10) phalanges.
