1. Which of the following does NOT occur during mitosis?

A, Condensation of the chromosomes

B, Replication of the DNA

C, Spindle formation

D, Separation of sister chromatids

2. Which of the following statements regarding the function of mitosis is false?

A, Mitosis promotes genetic diversity.

B, Mitosis is necessary for asexual reproduction in eukaryotes.

C, Mitosis promotes repair tissues.

D, Mitosis allows organisms to grow.

3. At the end of which phase of cell division are the daughter cells half the ploidy (n) of the original parent cell (2n)?

A, After Mitosis

B, After Mitosis and Meiosis Ⅰ

C, After Meiosis Ⅰ

D, After Meiosis II

♦ Relevant knowledge
A cell’s cycle can be described as a a cycle in which cells prepare for cell division, and actually performs it and produces the two daughters cells. The cycle of cells is comprised of four main phases: G1, S, G2 and M. The M phase is called mitosis. In this phase, cells create two nuclei, which allow it to split into daughter cells.

    1.  The correct answer is option B, Replication of the DNA

Explanation: During mitosis, DNA replication do not occur. It occurs before mitosis at the S phase of interphase. Mitosis divides newly replicated DNA into two daughter cells.

    2. The correct answer is option A, Mitosis promotes genetic diversity – this is false statement

Explanation: In mitosis no crossing over occurs. So it does not produce any genetic diversity. In meiosis, crossing over occurs and the result is genetic diversity.

    3. The correct answer is option C, After Meiosis -I

Explanation: Meiosis I is also called the reduction division in which the ploidy number became half of the original. In meiosis -I homologous chromosomes separate from each other. This is necessary for maintenance of ploidy level in all organisms. Meiosis produce gamete cells which contain half of the chromosome. The reduction of chromosome occur in meiosis -I whereas Meiosis -II, sister chromatids are separated from each other. and it is called equational division like mitosis. So correct answer is Meiosis-I which produce haploid cells (n) from diploid cells (2n).

    9. A. The correct answer is
option b- replication of the DNA

    Explanation: During mitosis,
DNA replication do not occur. It occurs before mitosis at the S
phase of interphase. Mitosis divides newly replicated DNA into two
    daughter cells.

    9.B Correct answer is option
a- Mitosis promotes genetic diversity – this is false
    statement

    Explanation: In mitosis no
crossing over occurs. So it does not produce any genetic diversity.
In meiosis, crossing over occurs and the result is genetic
    diversity.

    9.C Correct answer is option
    c – After Meiosis -I

    Explanation: Meiosis I is
also called the reduction division in which the ploidy number
became half of the original. In meiosis -I homologous chromosomes
separate from each other. This is necessary for maintenance of
ploidy level in all organisms. Meiosis produce gamete cells which
contain half of the chromosome. The reduction of chromosome occur
in meiosis -I whereas Meiosis -II, sister chromatids are separated
from each other. and it is called equational division like mitosis.
So correct answer is Meiosis-I which produce haploid cells (n) from
    diploid cells (2n).
