For those of you who are interested in seeing amazing sights and enjoying the sense of adventure that comes with traveling to exotic places, Iceland should be at the top of your bucket list. While Iceland might not be everybody’s cup of tea, for those who don’t mind the cold and want to experience something totally out of the norm, then paying a visit to this wintery wonderland is definitely a good idea. The continent is host to some of the most spectacular sights in the world. So join us as we explore some of the most amazing highlights of Iceland, as well as some bizarre and unusual things you definitely won’t find anywhere else.
Canned Air
Believe it or not, but these days, with global warming and carbon pollution rising to all-time levels, the desire to breathe clean, fresh air is becoming something that people are actually trying to make a business out of.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
While visiting Iceland to breathe the air yourself is ideal, bringing a can of the stuff back home for those who couldn’t attend would be a nice gesture. While we don’t think you’d really be getting your money’s worth, it would be a much funnier gift than a “My Friend Went To…” t-shirt!
The Coolest Caves
One of the best things about all the cold weather in Iceland is that it creates a number of really amazing natural phenomena that make for some pretty spectacular sights. One of the coolest of these has to be the many ice caves that you’ll find around the country.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
These are essentially rock ridges that have been frozen over with an icy ceiling which create these amazingly luminescent natural structures. You often have to hike to reach these though, so be prepared for an adventure!
The Last Cheeseburger
If you’re traveling to Iceland in the hopes of enjoying a traditional, Western-style fast-food meal, you’re not going to have much luck! While we might all enjoy a fast food snack from time to time, the small population in Iceland and their inherently traditional culture means that they don’t eat fast food much.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In fact, there are no operating McDonalds restaurants in the entire country and the last one was sold in 2009. So get used to eating the local food – or bring your own snacks!
Mousekeeping
Despite the harsh cold weather, Iceland did experience a significant rise in the brown rat population during the 19th and 20th century as boats would frequently bring them with shipments by accident.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The fishing ports had the highest concentration of this species and, as a result, the locals had to import cats to help control the mice population. Today, having cats as ‘professional’ mice catchers is still a tradition in Iceland and one that we hope continues for a while! Iceland is a cat-lover’s dream it seems.
Love Is Everywhere
As you can imagine, with all that cold weather, Icelandic people know how to keep it warm! As you can imagine, having all that cold weather and lack of direct sunlight can make people feel a little sad, drowsy, or isolated from time to time.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
To show the people that they care (and have a great sense of creativity), the Icelandic government replaced all the red traffic lights with little red hearts to help brighten up your day if you’re in traffic and feel less disappointed about hitting a red light!
Mountain Of A Man
For fans of the show Game Of Thrones, they might recognize the man below. His name is Julius Bjornsson and just last year, he went on to win The World’s Strongest Man Competition proving that he really is as strong as a mountain!
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The Icelandic resident has spent the majority of his life working out and focussing on bodybuilding. Even though he was born looking like a regular toddler, his immense height and girth came as a result of his intensive training and body sculpting.
Blue Lagoon
One of the most surreal experiences in Iceland has to be the warm geothermal spas that you’ll find towards the southwestern parts of the country. These stunning natural phenomena will make you feel like you’re in a sci-fi movie.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Viewing the cold surroundings while being warmed by the fresh, mineral water from the hot spring is definitely an experience you’re not likely to forget! The water is warmed purely by geothermal energy and the mud at the base of the spa is incredibly good for your skin.
Save That For The Toilet!
The fact that someone would have to put up a sign like this might be a bit worrying to most of us, but it might be better to know where the landmines are sometimes! As you can imagine, having all that open space to yourself means that getting caught without a toilet at times can be a real issue.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Apparently, it seems as though there’s a high inclination for relieving yourself in the wilderness in Iceland, so be sure to read the signs or keep it for the bathroom!
Homes For Elves
These days, elves and other mystical creatures have become a popular subject in mainstream culture and with all the movies we’re exposed to regarding the topic, it’s nice to see someone taking the issue seriously!
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Icelandic culture is based primarily on traditional Nordic values and folklore and as a result, elves are a prominent part of their culture. These days, it’s not uncommon to see tributes to them in Iceland, like these little elf homes, which are meant to be a good omen.
Puffins! Puffins Everywhere!
Puffins are easily one of the most spectacular birds in the animal kingdom and their uniquely colored beaks and patterns make them unique to any other species in the world. Puffins are considered to be one of the national birds of Iceland and are thought to have originated on the continent.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Puffins are known to migrate to a variety of different places in the world, including France, New York, Morrocco, and even Siberia. They spend their first few years at sea in order to get used to the cold.
Local Delicacy
As we mentioned earlier, the Icelandic aren’t big fans of Western-style fast food and sometimes even finding snacks that would be familiar to westerners can be a challenge depending on where you are on the continent.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In most cases, the locals tend to favor local dishes that they’ve known for hundreds of years and one of the most popular is known as Hákarl. This is essentially a large shark native to the waters and is enjoyed in cured fillets. Otherwise, there are loads of fruit and veg to munch on.
Nakedness
Because of the fact that the majority of Iceland is largely unpopulated, the people there are quite used to being unclothed! This is largely because there’s a lot more privacy in a place like that and the culture is just driven to be more open regarding the issue – especially in public places like gym bathrooms, spas, or saunas.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Even though the weather there is frequently below zero, for some reason, the people seem to be more eager about taking their clothes off. So as a warning, don’t say you weren’t warned.
No Trains
Over the years, Iceland has tried a number of times to develop a train system for the country as part of their public transport initiative. There’s only one big problem – too few people and too many cars!
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This means that you’re definitely going to be renting a car if you’re ever planning to travel around the country much and should always be sure to have spare fuel with you on hand, as running out of gas in a sub-zero snowstorm is definitely not an ideal way to spend a vacation!
Icelandic Horse
Although Iceland is covered in ice and snow much of the year, many animals still manage to thrive in this environment. These horses are known as the Icelandic horse and you cannot find them anywhere else in the world because they are actually descended from the type of horse that lived during the Viking rule in the country.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
They might look like your average horse, but they’re actually pretty different. They’re smaller than the average horse, they have furrier coats, and they have an unusual gait. Unlike most of the horses you know, they roam free!
Clean Energy
Iceland is one of the few countries on the earth today that has really made a point out of harvesting cleaner, natural forms of energy. Today, roughly more than 85% of the homes in Iceland are powered by geothermal energy and the government makes up the additional need for energy largely with things like wind turbines and hydropower.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
We really hope that the lessons made in Iceland can be used as a positive example of this kind of technological change to become more popular around the world.
Saucy
Iceland is a culture that is simply obsessed with sauce. If anything, it’s probably the one thing that they have in their culture which most resembles the western diet and no dish is considered completed until the sauce is done!
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In fact, there are a number of different dishes that are frequently served in the country which are generally paired with their own unique sauce. Some of the more popular ones include Bearnaise, Pylsusinnep (a sort of grainy mustard) and Remúlaði, a vinegary mayo that’s popular in Britain as well.
Sports Fan
Sports are a big part of Icelandic culture and as you can imagine, when there’s not much to do in such a sparsely populated area, finding joy in entertainment is important.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
While most countries around the world are used to showing support for their favorite sporting teams, Icelandic people are known to really get sports crazy and are dedicated supporters of their respective teams or national athletes. It’s not uncommon to see people showing their support in the streets during sports seasons or events.
Miss Universe Flight Attendant
Miss Universe is an annual pageant that is hosted in different countries around the world and is all about showcasing the glitzy, glamorous and most beautiful people from around the world.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In 2016, a flight attendant named Maria Leifsdóttir entered the competition as a representative for Iceland and wound up winning the competition! As a result, she has become one of the most famous models in Iceland and spends most of her time traveling. You’ll be sure to find some other really beautiful flight attendants on the way there, too!
Cool Cops
Iceland is one of the few countries in the world that is known for having an incredibly low crime rate and in general, is regarded as one of the safest countries on Earth. So when you’re there, you can rest assured that you’re pretty safe over the course of your stay.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
It also means that when you do encounter a cop there, they’re likely to be fun, friendly helpers rather than traditional authority figures and can even be quite fun if you get to meet the right ones!
Neighbours
Despite the fact that Iceland is largely regarded as one of the remotest places on Earth, in terms of geography they’re practically next door neighbors with North America.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Technically speaking, Iceland is split in half by the North-Atlantic ridge which means that the western side of the continent falls on the same tectonic plate as North America and the eastern side of the country, the Eurasian tectonic plate. In fact, scuba diving in the ridge between these two tectonic plates is a highly popular tourist activity.
One Giant Film Set
Iceland is one of the most surreal natural landscapes you’re likely to see in your lifetime, and in many ways, it looks as though the landscape hasn’t changed for thousands of years.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Because of this, artists and creatives have been drawn to the continent for many years and more recently, it has become a hotspot for international film and television productions on a large-scale. Star Wars, Game Of Thrones, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty are just some of the films that have been filmed in Iceland.
Endless BBQ
There is nothing better than a warm fire to keep the cold at bay and in Iceland, it’s a staple fixture of their everyday diet. During the summer times when the weather is a little more hospitable, natives are likely to be outside enjoying a warm BBQ in the traditional sense of the term with a few beers and good company to keep them warm.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
So if you plan on staying, be prepared to enjoy a lot of fire-made food and outdoor merriment during the summer times.
Northern Lights On A Plane
Yet another one of the most amazing things that you’ll see in Iceland while you’re there and why so many make the journey to the continent is for the chance to have a really crisp and clear view of the Northern Lights.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
These amazing phenomena are caused by the flux of magnetic radiation and the sun’s ultra-violet radiation being scattered on the Earth’s atmosphere at a high altitude, causing this stunning light show. Iceland Air has even incorporated them into their airplanes!
Midnight Sunset
One of the great things about living in an area with such a thin atmosphere is that you get the chance to witness some incredible lighting conditions.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
One of the strangest thing about the seasons in Iceland is that in winters, nighttime can last almost an entire day sometimes, and in summer, the sun only tends to set at midnight. As you can imagine, adjusting to this can be quite difficult so it’s best to make sure you have thick curtains or a blindfold to ensure you get enough rest.
Lots of Volcanoes
Because of the fact that Iceland is based on a major tectonic ridge, the continent is subjected to a lot of tremors from the shift of the underlying plates. As a result of this, Iceland has become a hotspot for the formation of powerful volcanoes, many of which are still active today.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In fact, every four years, a major volcano is said to erupt and it’s common to experience a volcano drill from time to time. If you have the courage, seeing one of these up close is definitely a good idea!
45 Everyday Problems Only British People Will Understand
British people live a very different life from those elsewhere in the world, and therefore have a lot of everyday problems that are unique to them. Whether it’s someone not saying thank you when you keep a door open for them, to understating how ill you actually feel. We’ve put together a list of 40+ relatable problems Brits have on an everyday basis.
No More Puddings
Yorkshire Puddings are an essential Sunday Roast addition. Hailing from the great county of Yorkshire, the Yorkshire pudding is made from a batter of eggs, flour, and milk (or water) and often can take years to perfect a technique.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
When finding an unexpected Yorkshire pudding in the back of the freezer, it can either be the best day or the worst day. On the bright side, this can make any meal feel like a Sunday roast. But, only finding one pudding on a Sunday can mean an awkward discussion around the dinner table about who gets it.
No, Thank You
British people are often known around the world for their politeness, but most of us know that isn’t necessarily the case. One of the most annoying things that can happen is when acts of kindness aren’t acknowledged or reciprocated.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
A lot of people know this feeling in which we open the door and aren’t thanked for it. First, the eyes are kept on the person rude enough not to say thank you. Next, a sarcastic “you’re welcome” before shaking your head. Finally, once the culprit is out of earshot, a quick “unbelievable” is sufficient.
A Quick Exit
Anyone bad at making their exit will be all too familiar with this problem. It’s always awkward being the first to leave any party, event, or function — and no one has really worked out the best phrase to signal their departure.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The first person to decide to leave will often stand up and state “right” as their cue to leave. This may then spring a mass exodus of people leaving, and none want to be the first ones to announce their intention to go.
Slice of Heaven
Mr Kipling’s are usually the show stoppers at every afternoon tea or get together. The infamous Angel Slices have even made an appearance on Britain’s favourite baking show, The Great British Bake Off. However, if you’re not a fan of baking them yourself, you’ll often encounter another problem.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This user found a major problem with Mr Kipling Angel Slices — they’re now packaged individually! This means that going to the cupboard and getting a quick snack may not be as easy as it originally was.
Problem With Sarcasm
British accents, dependant on where you’re from, can make anything sound posh. The problem also is that there are some phrases we just can’t say without it sounding inherently sarcastic or rude, even when we’re trying to offer someone some praise.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Even when we do just want to say to our friends “good one,” it often feels like it comes from a place of malice. Perhaps, it’s about time we think of another phrase that we can start saying to make us sound more proud and less annoyed.
Down the Chippie
A food dish British people are probably most commonly known for is fish and chips. Sometimes, there really is no better summer’s day than heading to the seaside, and getting your favourite chippie to eat along the promenade.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
However, most British people will be aware of a claim that most people have — “wherever you get your chippie, my suggestion is better.” This is especially true for Brits who love to go to the seaside on holiday. Whilst the recommendations are always nice, nothing compares to the local.
Cup of Tea?
British people often are amazed that countries around the world have not taken to their love of tea, specifically breakfast tea. Brits have their own preference on how they take their tea of course — milk, no milk, two sugars or none at all.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
There’s also skill in learning when your tear is the perfect temperature. Some like to drink their tea as soon as the kettle’s boiled, warming them up for the day. However, some will leave theirs until it is too late, and it can ruin someone’s day.
The Crisps Conundrum
Crisps, or ‘chips’ as the Americans refer to them, can be the perfect British snack. Crisps can be used as an ingredient for a variety of dishes and meals, including the infamous crisp sandwich — your favourite packet of crisps in between two pieces of buttered bread.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
However, most crisp packets can really just be nothing but half full of air. So, when most of us tuck into our after-dinner snack of cheese and onion, we’ll often devour the packet in no time.
An Unexpected Surprise
Sometimes surprises can be nice — a surprise birthday can be a wonderful way of letting someone you care about know how much you love them. However, surprising a British person with an unexpected visit is one of way to get them riled up.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This is often the case for workers who are looking forward to going home, only to be met with a client at 4:59 pm. It could also be for unexpected home visitors when no cleaning has taken place that week at all. Just know when someone says this, it isn’t a compliment.
Typical British Weather
Britain, unlike anywhere else in the world, has the most random weather patterns. Usually, people can trust their local weathermen and women, but for British people, this is another story.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The sun could be splitting the skies one day, and the next could bring about a torrent of rain and thunderstorms. It’s also important to note that British people do not have especially long summers, so don’t be surprised if you see us out in mid-September wearing vest tops!
British BBQ Essentials
Given that British summers last for approximately all of two weeks, we need to make the most out of any typical summer activity, including barbeques. On a hot day, expect all the shops to be out of disposable barbeques.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
However, there’s not always a guarantee that these barbeques will go according to plan. An umbrella needs to be brought in case of a quick or sudden shower, as well as all the condiments in the cupboard despite how old they are. No barbeque is really complete without a curious wasp and undercooked food!
No Recording Zone
Looking all over social media, it seems as though non-British people who perhaps live in warmer climates are happier with their amazing lives being documented. No pale skin and no worries. However, we’ve noticed that Brits are a bit more reluctant to show themselves on camera.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
When friends start to film, there is a range of responses we all go through. Either we laugh to show we’re carefree and fun, a fake smile and wave to acknowledge the camera’s presence, a frown to show we’re unhappy with being filmed, shielding our faces, and — of course — storming off.
Not Likely
British people are normally quite polite and are usually more than happy to assist people if they wake up on the right side of the bed. However, sometimes if we are caught on an off day, our responses to simple instructions may be a little vaguer than usual.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
For example, if a boss at work asks if we are able to do something, we may respond with “could do.” We all know that saying could is pretty much equal to a resounding no. Hopefully, co-workers will keep this in mind next time they ask for our help.
A Sunday Roast
If it isn’t a family fight over the last Yorkshire pudding, then one will definitely erupt over having the last roast potato. Sunday roasts are often accompanied by a plethora of potato varieties, however, everyone’s favourite seems to be a roast potato.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Still, many Brits will know the intense guilt that comes with being the one that takes the last roastie, so will often coax others into taking it first. Insisting someone has the last roastie is one way of making sure that we don’t feel guilty when it’s offered back to us.
Soup-er Effort
As most Brits are staying in this winter, most people recognise the need for making the most out of the contents of our fridge. A dish that most people have found to be useful is a homemade soup to get them through the long and cold winter nights ahead.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Soup can be made from anything — leftover vegetable peelings, discarded chicken bones, and a variety of random vegetables leftover at the bottom of the fridge. Most British people will really show their culinary skills in the autumn when pumpkin soup becomes all the rage.
An Unusual Pairing
We’ve all heard of the jam/cream and scone debate. However, a new and probably more controversial debate is starting to pop up in family homes across the UK — butter and jam. We’ve seen people post in favour of eating Weetabix dry with a spread of jam and butter.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
However, people are now saying that the most heinous crime is being created with this new trend; people are putting their buttery knife into the jam jar. Not only is this gross on several levels, but it ruins the flavour of the jam for everyone else. Just wash your knife or grab a new one!
Collection Day Confusion
Bin collections can be the most confusing time of the week for many people, with many people risking putting out the wrong colour of wheelie bin for their collection day. Others, however, are more concerned about what day to leave out the bins.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Despite bin collections happening once or twice a month, we seem to completely forget when the collections are. People will often be out in their streets in their pyjamas lugging their wheelie bin out to the street corner, only to find they’ve left it out on the wrong day!
Jacket: Yes or No?
There is always a doubt cast on the weather forecast. Multiple websites could say that there won’t be a drop of rain for the entire day, however, most British people have been fooled by the weather channels on one or more occasions to take the risk.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Therefore, despite the sun splitting the skies, you’ll always spot a British person carrying a jacket “just in case” something changes. Of course, the more likely they distrust the weather, the heavier the jacket will be so you may spot someone in their winter coat at the height of summer!
Email Etiquette
With most people working from home, we’re all sending a lot more emails than usual. Even when everyone was in the office, it was hard to judge how to reply to someone’s email without coming across as too cold, or too friendly. Thankfully, exclamation marks have helped.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Usually, exclamation marks will get across someone’s enthusiasm. However, it is important to limit them in emails so not all of our emails look like this! It would be a shame, though! Using them does make you look less miserable, too!
A Sticky Situation
We’re almost convinced that this has happened to almost every single British person. One day, you’re minding your business in the kitchen cooking dinner, when all of the sudden the knife goes the wrong way and you’re left with a cut on your finger. The first port of call is the medicine cabinet.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
However, it seems to be that everyone is convinced they have some plasters lying around when they don’t! Substitutes for plasters often include toilet paper or kitchen roll or wrapping a bit of cloth around to stop the bleeding. Brits are nothing but resourceful!
A Daily Treat
We’re definitely culprits of this problem. Sometimes we’ll do our weekly shop, proud of all the snacks and food we got for the week ahead. However, it only takes one text message to screw up our weekly dinner plans — “takeout?”
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Sometimes, there’s just nothing better after a bad day than going down to the local chippie or takeout and ordering freshly cooked chips. Had a stressful day at work? That stress can easily be resolved with a chippie. It really does seem to be the best cure!
Overexaggerating Problems
British people will often over or under exaggerate their problems dependent on the situation. For example, saying “it’s a bloody nightmare” could be in reference to a traffic jam that’s going to make you late for your morning meeting.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Brits will also use the softer phrase, “it’s not ideal” to explain situations where something terrible has happened such as their car breaking down, or completely burning their dinner. For all non-British people out there, make sure you pay attention to these two phrases!
Lunchtime Friends
Most of us love our work colleagues, and will often be closer to some colleagues than we are with our own family members. However, someone’s workday can easily be ruined by their work colleague offering to take lunch with them.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Despite loving their friends, British people do like to take time out of their workday to recharge, or simply just to spend time off to sit on their own and watch funny videos on their phone. Before you offer to go to lunch with your colleague, think carefully!
Sickly Feeling
You’ll very often not see British people taking sick days off work, mainly because they really downplay just how sick they’re really feeling. Due to the weather, most Brits are used to getting an odd cough and cold here and there throughout the year.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
However, when a British person messages you to say that they’re not feeling the best, it’s probably a good idea to bring them a care package and a whole bunch of medicine. Again, this just shows how often British people downplay the situation that they’re in.
Cleaning Mugs
For a nation that loves to drink mountains of tea, we are awful when it comes to actually cleaning the mugs we put the tea in. The biggest culprits for this are often university students, who will allow their dirty dishes and mugs to pile up until there is no more room.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Instead of leaving it to be someone else’s business, cleaning a mug takes all of two seconds! A quick scrub with a sponge and washing up liquid and you’re free. Although, if you’re spotted beside the sink when everyone else finishes, good luck!
Missed Movies
Going to the cinema is a great, and largely inexpensive, pastime for literally anyone of any age — especially movie buffs. However, some people will take themselves to the cinema, and either spend most of the time on their phone or talking they don’t catch onto the plot.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This will be made worse when the person they went with was doing the exact same thing. Before long, both people are trying to catch up to the plot and maybe leave the screen more clueless than when they went in.
Big Meals
Most British people are missing the feeling at the moment of being out at a restaurant and seeing their waiter or waitress bringing them their meal. Even more, most people will be missing the feeling of when their meal arrives and are shocked at how big their portion is.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
In true British tradition, the shock is often shown through mild expletives like ‘goodness.’ This is also done to show the waiting staff that you’re very impressed by the food that you’ve just received.
Politely Declining
British people aren’t the best to deal with offering rejections. We often try to fluff up our rejections by saying, “Oh I’d love to but…” or “That sounds great but…” to try and save the other person from feeling upset or hurt.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
So, to all those non-British folk out there, keep in mind that if a British person ever says something like — “I’d love to but I can’t” — this means that they do not want to do it, and so, they will not be doing it. Hope that helps!
Tempting Biscuits
Having a variety of biscuits in the cupboard is an absolute essential in most British households. This is often either to have some alongside a cup of tea, to snack on either before or after dinner, or to have as a stash in case of an unexpected visitor.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Either way, when a packet of biscuits is opened, it’s only a matter of time until the stash is completely emptied. When they’re just sitting in front of you and are being offered by your host, it would be rude to not take one, right?
Beware of the Monsters
Unlike most other countries, Britain isn’t used to hot weather and so, unlike other European countries or America, we don’t have air conditioning units in our house. Therefore, when it’s warm, Brits need to be inventive about how to cool off.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Thankfully, we have discovered an easy, and cheap way of doing this — sleeping with our legs outside of the duvet. That way, our top halves are still nice and toasty and our legs and feet are getting all the cool air. Win-win all around!
Bashing Queue Jumpers
As British people are often known for their politeness, it’s often not likely that someone will publically scold someone if they feel hard done by. This is often seen in queue jumpers, where people will be angry about those cutting in line, but won’t say anything.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Therefore, when someone decides that they’ve had enough, other people often feel a little bit of a victory knowing that someone is facing the consequences of their actions. We hope they learnt their lesson and don’t try to pull a stunt like that again!
Supermarket Closeness
Working out when the supermarkets will be the least busy is a skill very few people have. Regardless, you’ll often encounter people in the aisles you are in hovering over the same product as you are looking for.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Instead of politely asking if you could lean over and grab your item, British people often look in different parts of the aisle until that person leaves and they can grab their product. British people often don’t want to interrupt anyone, so will disadvantage themselves rather than others.
Thin Bin Bags
Taking out the bins is one chore that almost everyone hates. It’ll often involve squeezing your feet into the first pair of shoes you see closest to the door, awkwardly walking until you reach the wheelie bin. Of course, there is another task — making sure the bin bag doesn’t explode.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
As this user pointed out, bin bags often seem to be made of the thinnest material known to man. Meaning that a small bump or scrape can cause your waste to spill everywhere, ruining your day.
Front Door Magic
If you’ve ever housesat for a British person, you’ll be familiar with the specific instructions that come with opening the front door. For all those who have never had the privilege, British doors only open in very specific ways.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
This may involve putting the key in only a certain length and trying to unlock the door. It may also involve putting the door handle at a specific angle before the door can unlock as well. We guess that you’ll be there for a while figuring out the secret combination.
Chummy Chat
One skill that every single British person has had to learn over their lifetime is making small talk with any construction worker or builder that comes by to do work on your house. Most of the time, you’ll be making generic statements or complimenting them on their work.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
There also may be conversations along the lines of “who wants tea?” and then remembering the tea orders for five or ten people. Even though you might not be able to put this on your CV, you could always say that you are an effective communicator!
Blow Your Own Crumpet
Crumpets are a real breakfast treat. For any non-British people reading this list and wondering what crumpets are, they’re essentially a fluffy pancake with lots of crevices. British people put heaps of butter on their crumpets and let it sink in.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
However, people are so eager to get their morning crumpets, they become frustrated that the packaging is just too hard to open! This Reddit user even complained saying that NASA should make spaceships out of crumpet packaging — maybe that’s an idea for Mr. Elon Musk!
All Aboard!
Some people might get their knickers in a twist at the thought of queue jumpers, but sometimes British people can be too polite for their own good. This user told a story about the time where extreme etiquette and politeness delayed their journey!
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
Two of the three people standing at a bus stop offered the other to go ahead of them, with both refusing. Eventually, the third person and bus driver urged one of them to stand down and go first. We hope they weren’t there for too long, because that could have lasted all day!
Bored Much?
This is a problem that really resonates with British teenagers. In a small town, there often isn’t anything to do apart from drive to the next closest town and drive back again. When we’re hanging out with our friends, this can often mean there is not much to talk about.
......... ADVERTISEMENT .........
..8..
The most exciting thing in the world could happen to someone, but as soon as they are asked if they have been up to much, it is almost a guarantee that 99% of the time, they will say no.
Not a Great Bounty
Almost every British person is familiar with Celebrations, the box of chocolates that make an appearance around Christmas every year and are filled with everyone’s favourite chocolate bars — Mars, Galaxy, Malteasers, and more! However, there is often one enemy and that is the Bounty bar.

Bounty’s are like marmite in that you either love them or hate them. This user opened his Celebrations advent calendar to discover that for the first three days of December, he got Bounty bars. That must be some cruel job by the people at Celebrations. Such a waste!
DVD Bargain Hunting
A staple of a British teenager’s weekend is going to CEX Entertainment Exchange and seeing what DVDs are on special offer on their 50p stand. However, this user discovered that recently, they’ve had to make a few adjustments.

Given that most people prefer to stream movies rather than buy DVDs, CEX has now had to put their bargain bin DVD prices up from 50p to £1. Whilst 50p may not be much of a change, it really is a sign that things are not doing too well at the moment.
First of the Month
We don’t think we’ve heard this rhyme anywhere else in the world. Whenever the first of the months come along, British people often have a rhyme that goes. “Pinch Punch it’s the first of the month!”

There are many theories as to why people have this instilled in them from childhood, but the main reason seems to revolve around superstitions and the supernatural. Therefore, it is considered unlucky if you don’t say this phrase on the first day of the month!
Glowing Red
Given that British people aren’t acclimatised to warmer or hotter weather, we’re not in the routine of putting on suncream whenever we need it most during the summer, or even on holidays. We’ll often skip the SPF in favour of a nice, even tan.

This is extremely dangerous and the importance of SPF should be stressed. However, when most of us come back from our holidays, we’ll often be a nice bright red than have a tan. Most people will even say that they have ‘caught the sun!’
Pancake Tuesday!
Pancake Tuesday is everyone’s favourite holiday — the excitement is like Halloween and Christmas combined! It has its origins in Christianity where people will finalise their Lenten sacrifices and indulge in eating pancakes and other treats.

Like Easter, Pancake Tuesday will not be on one set day (apart from a Tuesday) and will be held on whatever date Shrove Tuesday falls. Heads up for 2021… Pancake Tuesday is on Tuesday, February 16th, just a few days after Valentine’s Day!
Making Yourself at Home
Whenever we’re invited over to someone’s house for the first time, this can cause a lot of anxiety. What if their parents don’t like me? What if I go somewhere I shouldn’t? What if I embarrass myself? These are all questions that have gone through our minds.

When someone tells you to make yourself at home, instead of doing exactly what you’re told, British people often sit more rigid than they were before and will sit at the edge of their chair until it’s time to go. Thankfully as time goes on, everyone becomes a bit more comfortable!
Never Ending Phone Call
Finally, this might be a problem that every single British person can relate to. As we’ve come to discover, there is not just one way of saying goodbye to someone on the phone, rather it becomes a five-minute conversation of its own with the two callers battling to get the last word.

It might take twenty different versions of the word ‘bye’ before the phone is finally hung up. Some people will even try and continue the conversation after this and the cycle will begin again!
