Answer “What is the magnetic field strength at point a?”
A) We know magnetic field strength is a fact, B = µoI/2r, where µo = 4π x 10-7
I is the current, r is the distance of the point from the current carrying wire.
At point 1, net B = magnetic field due to current in top wire + magnetic field due to current in bottom wire = B1+(-B2)
= (4π x 10-7 x 10)/(2π x 0.02 ) – (4π x 10-7 x 10)/(2π x 0.06) = 6.67 x 10-5T
B2 is negative, as it points in the opposite direction to the page. However, it is further away from the page so the net magnetic field is not there.
B) As described above, magnetic field direction at point 1 can be seen out of the page.
C) Magnetic field strength at point 2 is
B (total)=B1+B2=(4π x 10-7 x 10)/(2π x 0.02) + (4π x 10-7 x 10)/(2π x 0.02)=2 x 10-4 T (into page)
Both B1 & B2 point to the page. Therefore, net field is into page.
D) As described above, magnetic field direction at point 2 can be seen out of the page.
E) Magnetic field strength at point 3 is
B (total)= B1+B2= (4π x 10-7 x 10)/(2π x 0.02) – (4π x 10-7 x 10)/(2π x 0.06)= 6.67 x 10-5 T (out of the page)
F) B2 is negative, as it points in the opposite direction to the page. However, it is farther away than the page magnetic field. The net magnetic field direction at point 2 is also out of the pages.
