It has been over a decade since Thomas Beatie shook the world and became globally known as “The Pregnant Man.” Now, after going through so much, the transgender advocate is ready to reflect on what has been the toughest 10 years of his life.

Over 10 years have passed since headlines such as “Pregnant Man Gives Birth” were dominating most news outlets. The media painted it as some sort of biological revolution. However, Thomas Beatie simply wanted to be himself…

Not only was Thomas Beatie the talk of the town a decade ago, he also became something of a cultural icon – The Pregnant Man. This was particularly clear when British artist Marc Quinn made a full-size sculpture of Beatie, showing him topless during his pregnancy.

That’s not all though. People magazine called Beatie a pop culture icon, listing him in their edition “Pop Culture: 1000 Greatest Moments 1974-2011.” However, Thomas’ story started many years before 2007…

In order to understand where Thomas Beatie is today, we need to understand how his story began. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, his name was originally Tracy Lehuanani LaGondino.

Tracy used to be a model and even competed in the Teen USA beauty pageant as Miss Hawaii. Despite transitioning into the world of bodybuilding, Tracy had identified as a male since the age of 10 and by the time he was 23 years old, he started the full transition…

At 23, Thomas started to receive testosterone hormone treatment and by the time 2002 came around, he was ready to undergo the appropriate reassignment surgery. Soon enough, the multiple procedures made Thomas look more and more like a man, with extensive work applied to his chest and later to his lower region.

However, there is one fundamental difference between Thomas’ transformation compared to many other people in his situation – he wanted to stay fertile and have the ability to get pregnant…

Unlike many other people who undergo reassignment surgery, Thomas Beatie wanted to have all the features of a man, while still having the ability to have children.

This meant that he ended up keeping his internal reproductive organs. At the same time that he made this decision, he also officially changed his name on all the appropriate documentation. From here on out, Tracy Lehuanani LaGondino was now legally recognized on all platforms as Thomas Trace Beatie.

Just a year after his full transition to being a man was complete, Thomas Beatie tied the knot with his partner Nancy Gillespie – with their marriage being officially recognized by the state.

A couple of years later, they moved to Bend, Oregon and bought a home as husband and wife. However, Thomas and Nancy discovered that they would soon have to face many different types of challenges together. This started with the moment they tried to build a family…

Thomas Beatie’s story went to another level when he and his wife Nancy were ready to have kids. During the time that they were trying in 2007, they had trouble conceiving.

This is because Nancy was infertile. Seeing that Thomas still had all the internal reproductive organs necessary to have a child, he volunteered to get pregnant for the couple. However, was the procedure successful? Did Thomas still manage to have a healthy child despite his radical transformation?

Surely enough, Thomas Beatie’s pregnancy went well and he ended up delivering a healthy baby. However, that wasn’t the last time he got pregnant. Thomas ended up carrying all of his children with Nancy.

Between 2008 and 2010, he had two sons and a daughter: Susan Juliette, Austin Alexander, and Jensen James. Thomas proved to the world that he was able to build a family just like any woman, while being a man. And he decided to share his story with the world…

Knowing that he had a unique story to tell, Thomas wanted to share his experiences with the world. Before he had even given birth to any of his children, Thomas appeared on shows such as Oprah, The View, Dr. Drew, and Anderson Live, to name a few. to discuss his incredible story.

However, it wasn’t just TV shows that Thomas appeared on. He also displayed his bump in magazine shoots. Amazingly, Thomas went even further than that…

Having interviews and photoshoots wasn’t enough for Thomas. In order to give a true reflection of his experience, he documented every little detail. Thomas took camera crews with him to the hospital.

“There was no way to tell the story without [those images],” he said. “How else is a pregnant man going to look? I was the only one who could tell my story. If I didn’t, the media would have had their way with it and disseminated even more misinformation.”

The main reason that Thomas documented his pregnancies was to address some huge misconceptions. “Probably the biggest misconception is that I went back to being a woman to get pregnant,” he said.

“For me, this is the furthest thing from the truth. I was a fully legal man and husband before I got pregnant, while I was pregnant, and right now…never vacillated. I got pregnant and delivered my three children to be a father.” However, many people still didn’t understand…

Not everyone embraced Thomas’s pregnancies. Many media outlets sensationalized his pregnancy, using his family’s story as a sort of modern-day freak show. When Thomas was pregnant with his second child, he appeared in an interview on ABC.

In that interview, Barabra Walters showed off photos of Thomas with his pregnant belly (images that were already fairly infamous by that point) and commented on the fact that to her, they had a “disturbing” nature.

Despite his determination to paint a clear picture of his story for the world to see, Thomas could never foresee the sort of backlash he would receive from various members of the community.

Having hoped to get support from the LGBT community, things didn’t quite pan out that way. “To be brutally honest, the trans community has essentially ostracized me for being a pregnant man on top of being so visible,” he said. Soon enough, pressures started to affect his personal life too…

While the most vocal voices in the community did ostracize Thomas for his loudly outspoken attitude, many people came out years later and talked about his impact on them and how horrified they were by the way the media treated him. One such person was Trystan Reese, who is also a trans man who decided to birth his own child in 2017.

In an interview, Reese said, “I remember thinking it was a little early to tell this kind of story publicly. Culture change is developmental. It takes people time to understand the kindergarten level of transgender issues… this was Ph.D.-level stuff. I was really scared for him.”

It seems that the pressures from the media and Thomas’ newfound fame had drawn a wedge between him and his wife, Nancy. In 2012, just five years after stealing headlines as The Pregnant Man, Thomas separated from Nancy.

However, due to his gender, reaching a divorce settlement proved to be extremely complicated. Eventually, Beatie was granted custody of his three kids. This was only after Thomas agreed to pay alimony, and handed over a prized collection of 70 shark teeth that he had collected over the years.

The former couple’s divorce wasn’t just emotionally difficult — it also set quite a few interesting legal precedents. During the divorce, the original judge claimed that due to Thomas giving birth to the kids, he was considered a woman, and due to that, the marriage wasn’t recognized as legal.

This backward mindset was thankfully overruled by the Appeals Court, which declared the marriage valid, and so let the two finally divorce and divide assets and agree on custody. The court also stated that Thomas didn’t need to be sterilized to be legally recognized as a man — a huge win!

When asked why he fought so hard for this verdict, Thomas said, “I wanted to make sure that for my family, and for other people, that this was going to be something that’s doable, that our laws would respect it.”

Thanks to his determination, his birth certificate and legal documents were changed to reflect his identity as a male after he transitioned. “I did feel an obligation to continue to fight. I wasn’t about to lay down and say, ‘All right, fine, call me a woman.’”

During this troubling time in his life, Thomas ended having some serious entanglements with the law. In 2014, police arrested Beatie on suspicion that he was stalking Nancy after finding a GPS tracking device underneath her car.

Ultimately, he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was looking forward to putting this dark chapter of his life behind him. It turns out that there was light at the end of the tunnel in regards to Thomas’ personal life…

It turns out that Thomas didn’t have to wait too long to move on to the next love of his life. In fact, he started dating his second wife Amber during his divorce proceedings with Nancy.

Funnily enough, Amber had seen Beatie’s documentary years before actually meeting him. And when it came to having kids, it was Amber who was the one who got pregnant. “We went through IVF and used the same sperm donor as my three children to have a child between us,” he said.

At the time, Thomas didn’t know how the world would react to his status as the first pregnant man. After originally facing intense scrutiny, Thomas is surprised by how much has changed in the last decade.

“Now, the concept has been out there for many years, and there are probably hundreds of trans men out there on the spectrum who have given birth or are in the process of it,” he said. Now, Thomas gets to reap the benefits.

While every trans family approaches the parental roles differently, Thomas very much considers himself the father of the family. As far as he and Amber are concerned, they like to do things traditionally.

“That is what I am legally on [my kids]’ birth certificates and socially as they live their lives,” he said. “They know I gave birth to them and also know me in no other way—other than as their dad.” It’s not just Thomas’ family life that he is excelling in…

These days, Thomas Beatie enjoys having both a happy family life, as well as a successful career. Not only has he achieved success as a stockbroker, but Thomas also enjoys working on TV.

The Pregnant Man recently appeared as a contestant on the French reality show Secret Story. Every contestant has a secret and of course, Beatie had a good secret to keep. “The French people were awesome with their support of my story,” he said. “A million-fold over the [people in the] U.S.”

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear that Thomas’ story has had a profound impact on his family, particularly his kids. However, he revealed that two of his children actually considered changing just like their dad did.

His son Austin considered becoming a girl and his daughter Susan flirted with the idea of becoming a boy. “Austin had long hair and said he wanted to be a girl until he was three,” he said.

Although the dust has somewhat settled in Thomas’ story, he confirmed with his wife Amber that more kids might be on the way. However, if one of them is going to get pregnant, it will be Thomas.

“She said if I wanted a girl I would have to do it myself,” he said, to which Amber added by saying, “He would probably have ten.” With that said, if Thomas does go through with more pregnancies, he will have to deliver through a C-section.

Over 10 years since his story shook the world and sparked an international debate, Thomas Beatie is ultimately happy with his life decisions. Furthermore, if he had to do it all again, he absolutely would.

“Now that we’re 10 years into the future, in looking back at the unfolding of my story – I wouldn’t have changed a thing,” he said. “It allowed people to start a deeper conversation about gender and social roles in a way that wouldn’t have been broached otherwise.”

What many found to be a perplexing story was actually pretty straightforward. Beatie was simply born with a uterus and everything else that constitutes typical female anatomy.

However, since he was very young, he identified as being a male. Moreover, Beatie’s story shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise to the public. Seeing that there are 1.4 million American trans people, there’s a chance that he wasn’t the first. He was simply the first to be recognized by the U.S.

It wasn’t that Beatie started a trend; it was more about giving other people with non-traditional genders a platform to be themselves. There’s a chance that without his historic moment, celebrities such as Chaz Bono and Caitlyn Jenner wouldn’t have had the courage to embrace their true identities.

At the very least, Beatie’s story kickstarted a wave of posing uncomfortable questions to the media, that would eventually become normal topics of discussion. And Beatie’s impact on society didn’t stop there…

In a recent interview, Thomas talked about how much has changed when it comes to the way that trans people, especially ones who “break with tradition” like him, are received. Yet, much still needs to be done.

“I think a lot of people are still pigeonholed, thinking that if you want to be transgender, you have to completely get rid of all your reproductive organs,” Beatie said. While Thomas has had more surgeries since his pregnancy, he still retains his uterus.

Thomas explained that many people might think that “in order to be a true transgender person, you just have to go through with this (sterilization) — and that you shouldn’t want to have kids.”

“There needs to be discussions about fertility, preservation. Being transgender, you shouldn’t have to lose your right of having a family. You’re entitled to be happy and have a family and be respected,” he explained.

Thanks to stories like Thomas Beatie’s, trans pregnancies are more accepted. But, it’s still not fully embraced. According to a study done by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, there’s still a massive lack of services and medical assistance, and awareness.

This often means that trans men who choose to become pregnant are still discriminated against and treated poorly by both society and the medical community. Thankfully, men like Thomas are still advocating for a more fluid understanding of pregnancy.

The list of everyday things women struggle with that men simply don’t have to is a long one. But do you know what the real icing on the cake is? Having to pay more for the exact same things! It’s thanks to ‘the pink tax’: charging more for everyday objects simply because they’re being made for women. On average, women are charged an extra $1,300 per year for, essentially, the exact same products as men. Some things, like razors and shampoo, are predictable enough – but many others will surprise you…

A strange conundrum: expensive women’s deodorant. Folks, some stereotypes exist for a reason – and one of those is that the male armpit can produce some seriously concerning stenches. Interesting then that women, who stereotypically smell better as it is, pay $1.44 per ounce of deodorant while men pay $1.15.

That’s almost 30 cents less with every stick! And wait…there’s more. The average female deodorant container is about half an ounce less than that of men’s.

Whether it’s racing up the bike path or flying down streets on a skateboard, more and more young girls are following their inner sporty passions than ever. They race towards adulthood, as kids do, by taking the training wheels off of their bikes and engaging in riskier behavior.

But apparently girls are being punished more along the way: the “From Cradle to Cane” gender-based study found that girls’ sports equipment, such as bikes and scooters cost 6% more than boys’.

Is anyone surprised by this? It may be easy to miss if you’re not looking, but it’s there on display at the store all the time. To one side are the razors “for men” (or even just regular), and next to them are the very, very pink ones, often with a feminine figure (and perhaps some nail polish on the razor-holding hand).

Both advertise being a smooth shave, getting those difficult angles. And yet, the razor cartridges targeting female customers cost an average of 11% more than the ones for men.

Cleaning yourself is a basic human need – we’ve all smelled how badly it can go when someone isn’t able to (or, even more frighteningly, chooses not to) for too long.

But for some reason, based on a comparison of 18 different products – more than you even usually see on the shelf – women pay 6% more for body wash than men. Could the reason possibly be because the manufacturers think that women are less clean? If so, we certainly beg to differ…

Dry, flaky skin is so progressive. You know why? Because it doesn’t discriminate based on gender. But somehow, face cream “for women” costs about $3 more per ounce than those made for men – without any expensive differences in ingredients.

And while it’s true that some moisturizers are made of only the finest and most exotic ingredients, this survey of 110 facial moisturizers from three top online retailers (Amazon, Target, and Walmart) did not include any of those – just your basic hers and his.

For some reason, there’s been talk between girls since the beginning of time – or at least the beginning of locker rooms – about whether certain men wash their hair at all or not. But any store can fairly answer that question, with a nice variety of men’s shampoos on display to choose from.

For reasons still unknown, when New York City’s Department of Consumer Affairs compared 16 haircare products for a study, it showed that women paid 48% more for shampoos and conditioners.

Shaving can be a scary thing. It’s no surprise that anyone who is about to pick up a little razor blade and take it to their skin would want to be extra careful – and thankfully, we have shaving cream to soften the scratch.

Call us crazy, but wouldn’t one think that shaving a face (hello, gentlemen!) would require far more tender loving care than legs? Not according to prices at the drugstore, where for reasons still unknown the ladies’ shaving cream is worth more.

Ears are an often overlooked treasure of the body. They separate our fragile brains from the outside world with a tiny but powerful flap of skin, all while bringing a wondrous sense of sound to our lives…sometimes, against our will.

That’s when we reach for the earplugs. But a quick scan of earplug prices shows that earplugs marketed towards women not only cost more, but even include less than the “normal” earplugs – which are cheaper and with 2 extra pairs.

It might finally be time to say: get your panties in a twist, ladies. For men and women alike, underwear can come in plenty of shapes and sizes. Men get to choose between the freedom of boxers or the security of briefs, where women get to choose between, well, a string or the comfort of actual cloth covering actual flesh.

At the end of the day, most varieties of men’s underwear require more manufacturing material than women’s underwear do. But somehow, women’s are still more expensive – even though there’s usually less, well, there. And these days, men’s underwear get just as wild as women’s…

This super advanced baby cot got its own name – Diana. That’s the name of the model that’s designed for little girls.

If you can’t spot the difference between this Diana model and the other three models being offered at over $60 less, it’s the tiny pink stripe at the top of the umbrella. That must be the world’s finest pink silk up there to warrant such a markup! Or, just the pink tax as usual…

We didn’t think it would come to this, but in the name of the truth…here we are. When it comes time for a person to reach for their laxatives, they are looking for comfort. And there’s simply nothing comfortable about spending more money for no reason.

The laxatives “made for women” somehow cost more – despite the fact that other than a pink coating, which at best might make someone feel cuter when swallowing it, the ingredients are the same.

Oh, did you think we were going to get a break with socks? The least gendered item of clothing ever? Think again! Sure, men’s feet run bigger in size, and sock material is almost always the same, and by that reason it might sound like men’s should cost more.

But men’s socks don’t have the little hearts sewn onto them. Well, some probably do, but not nearly as many as women’s. On behalf of all women, we would like to say that we did not ask for those little hearts – especially not for an extra 3% price hike!

To date, there’s no scientific evidence that women need different kinds of braces than men – except maybe a smaller size. Yet based on the 22 products sampled in the “From Cradle to Cane” report, women’s supports and braces cost 15% more than men’s.

One particular seller called Life Brand even makes the same promise on both packages: “Helps provide support for mild sprains or strains.” Yet the smaller “slimfit” version for women is $9 more expensive. Hungry girls like us are probably thinking, that’s a whole meal…

By the time someone is reaching for a cane, there is usually just one of two reasons: a serious injury, or old age. In either scenario, it’s an expense someone would rather not have.

In another mystery of two things that are the same but have different prices, women’s canes cost 12% more on average than men’s. Will the wonders never cease? Well, in fact, it gets weirder…

The discrepancies don’t end with just the sports vehicles, either. Girls shouldn’t be paying anything extra for their safety – but on top of actual bicycles and other athletic favorites, safety equipment made “for girls” is also priced higher.

When the Department of Consumer Affairs conducted a study of gender pricing in New York City, the results showed that there was an even larger price difference between safety equipment like helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, and more – with girls’ versions (pink and often sparkly) costing 13% more on average.

Going to the car dealership always comes with a bit of price unpredictability, as the process of bargaining for the best possible price goes with the territory. But according to the American Economic Review, car dealers offer better initial prices to men than women – who are quoted at being offered an average of $200-400 more.

“Without any negotiating at all, two out of five males obtained a better offer than their counterparts achieved after bargaining on average for more than 40 minutes,” the study stated.

Going to the mechanic can be a harrowing experience; what’s wrong with the car? Will it even make it to the shop? Will fixing it break the bank? Auto repair shops frequently brag about working with uniform market prices, but a little study proved that wrong in many cases.

Going specifically to places that make this claim, people participating in the study quoted the prices they were offered as being higher for women than for men – even for fixing the same problems.

When it comes to making calculators, the requirements and functions required to build one don’t vary much. There are two types of calculators (for everyday use): regular and graphing. Both of these models can’t offer any difference in design – except for decorative.

But go to a store, and you just might see a black calculator priced at $6.99 while the same one in pink clocks in at $7.99, like these researchers did. The price of the pink one was apparently a sale price, too. Even the manufacturers suggested $8.99 as the retail price, across the board.

Once upon a time, the internet saw one of its earliest viral sensations. All the commotion was over a new pen model: the Bic “For Her.” Bic, a popular brand providing office and school supplies, had designed a pen that was better suited to women.

It came in purple and pink colors, had a soft handheld grip, and…cost almost twice as much as regular pens (yes, even the ones with a similar grip). Well, tragically, these pens did not make enough to stay in production.

Considering that Neutrogena’s face moisturizer is more expensive for women than men, it really shouldn’t come as much of a shock that it happens to be the same case when it comes to their face wash, too. Sure — it’s only 30 cents more but there’s really no logical reason behind these prices.

Unless face wash for females is made of gold or diamonds, we should all be shelling out the same amount of money to keep our faces clean.

Before sending some clothing out for paid laundry services, think about this: even when made of the same materials, women pay over $2 more for laundry and dry cleaning on average. The cost of men’s orders rounded out to $2.86 per item, and $4.95 for women’s orders.

It’s enough to make you rethink whether clean clothes are even really necessary! If there is a man in your relationship, we recommend sending him on the laundry runs from now on.

Although men’s fashion is making a big comeback, the prices don’t add up: today, men’s dress shirts still cost an average of 13% less than women’s, based on 40 product samples. Maybe women should just give shopping in the men’s section a try?

Men’s jeans have so many things that women’s jeans don’t have: comfort, more durable material, and of course, pockets that are actually useful. With so many disparities in gendered clothing prices, it almost seems like the fashion industry is begging women to just ditch their clothes and opt for men’s altogether.

Hey, the “boyfriend” jean is already a thing, and a best-seller at that! For 10% less of the price (based on 50 product samples), perhaps men’s jeans are the future of female.

When parents have babies, they’re TIRED – too tired to cook, too tired to clean, and too tired to put on normal clothes. Having to dress one person is hard enough, let alone two!

But the real pain is being the parents of a baby girl, whose clothes – from pants to sweaters and even onesies – will cost 4-9% more than the same clothes for boys (based on 20 product samples). We think these baby parents really deserve a break.

Well, well, well. Everyone knows that kids’ toys can be super intricate – and super expensive. And once a kid decides they want one of those mind-blowingly ornate dolls or legos or beanie babies or sets of hot wheels, it becomes downright impossible to tell them they can’t have it.

But based on a comparison of 20 products in the “From Cradle to Cane” study, it costs 11% more to purchase girls’ toys than toys for boys. Girls and boys are equally difficult to disappoint, but this sure makes a little girl less likely to get what she wants.

There’s nothing like going to a hotel knowing that a variety of little sample-sized hygienic products will be waiting there for you to take advantage of. But many hotels actually buy travel-size kits from external sources, such as Ace Hardware.

So researchers went down to Ace and found that they were stocking “his” and “hers” personal care kits – and they were surprised to find a “his” package in blue and a “hers” package in pink, and being sold for an extra $2.40…even though the contents are the same.

There are two types of people in the world: those who cut their own hair, and those who would never dare. When it comes to hair, women often have more of it than men. But when it comes to haircuts, it’s no secret that men can be quite fussy.

With fancy ornaments that ensure that every hair on a man’s head is cut to the same millimeter, male haircuts are no easy feat. But at many hair salons, the rates offered to women range from $1 to $25 more expensive – even just for basic trims!

Nobody likes having crocodile skin – and we’re talking about your flesh, not your shoes. When it comes to lotioning up, women often have a head start on accessing their skin’s driest parts thanks to the timeless tradition of leg shaving (and having less body hair in general).

It’s the men that need a really strong lotion to reach underneath all that skin fur they grow. And yet – you probably guessed it – men’s lotion is still cheaper. Why? We may never know.

Well, it’s pretty obvious why we can’t compare female tampons with anything; the alternative simply doesn’t exist. But the cost of tampons is still a subject worth raising: tampons are taxed, along with other hygienic products which have not been deemed a necessity.

40 states have legally labeled tampons and sanitary products as a luxury. We’re very curious what people imagine would happen if women didn’t have access to these “non-necessary” menstrual products, but we’re afraid to ask…the topic might get bloody.

Depending on who you ask, kids can be cute and fulfilling. But no one can deny that kids are expensive. Their regular needs are enough of an expense as it is, so why should people shopping for daughters rather than sons spend 13% more on kids’ shirts (based on 20 product samples) and 8% more on kids’ jeans (based on 20 product samples)?

Not much to say there except good luck to parents trying to explain to their daughters why they can’t have that many clothes.

Another day, another example of all the weird and wonderful ways that women are getting basically the same product in the same quantity, but not at the same price.

It makes you wonder how the manufacturers expect to sell their razors, sitting right next to more razors at a lesser price. Bad business strategy or just a very outdated perspective on the female audience? We’ll let you be the judge.

We can’t lie, those brightly colored bottles look pretty appealing. They don’t just offer delectable different scents – they also boldly list all of the ingredients right on the front. Unlike those boring bottles sitting next to them, designed for men, who apparently shouldn’t care what ingredients or colors their body wash come in.

What we wonder is, what should a woman do if she wants an ordinary bottle without every color of the rainbow or ingredients that sound like they belong on a dinner plate?

Most people know what Excedrin is for – it’s a long-time favorite for headaches, since it relieves pain without putting anyone to sleep. But only most women will know Pamprin, which…does the exact same thing, but comes in a pink bottle.

To be clear, painkillers don’t really have a way of differentiating between heads and uteruses. But advertisers do. If they actually asked women, most will probably opt out of pink.

No, it’s not a real museum…yet! But this cute and totally on point doodle can help give girls something to relate to, and others something to better understand how frustrating this issue can be. Sure, people can say “Just don’t buy the women’s products then.”

But who wants a future where companies that are designing products with women in mind will always charge more for them? It’s time to just fix the problem.

Whether you’re mad about the extra dollars coming out of your wallet or about your little girl growing up in a world where pink has become an expensive color because girls are supposed to prefer it, you’re going to be mad if you’re a mom.

Ahhh, the classic “put them on different sides of the store” tactic. Good old Chuck Taylor must not have expected any one person to be browsing both the men’s and the women’s sections of the shoe store, because people generally know which foot they have.

But that’s no excuse! This is clearly the same shoe, priced differently because of the intended audience and not because of the production. But no one’s fooled here.

Yes — even the prices of hairbrushes differ depending on who you’re purchasing it for. It’d be a different story if the hairbrush for boys had some sort of gadget or nifty feature but alas, it doesn’t. The only thing separating these products from being the same exact thing is the gender-generic colors, blue and pink.

Other than that, it’s all the same. They even used the same baby picture for both packages! In all honesty, if you’re going to charge women more, at least try to make the products look a little different.
